Which card should I get??

Ok, my uncle just got 400 bucks to newegg and he wants a new video card and a few other things and he said he would pay me 20 bucks to pick out the best video card for him. The hard part is, he already has an ATI X1800XT 512 which, imo, is still a solid card. He doesnt seem to want to pay 400 for the 8800GTS, so I was looking at:

X1950XT for about $260

7950GT 512 for about $240

I guess my question is:

A: Which of these cards is better considering he ONLY plays COD 2

B: Is it even worth upgrading to either of these over his X1800XT, or should he just spend his money elsewhere (nut up and get the 8800GTS)?

thank for the help guys

Be a good nephew and tell him to keep the $20 and wait a few months until the new ATI video cards come out.

I have an X1800 as well and it's more than enough card for 1280x1024. Heck, I play Oblivion at 1680x1050 just fine.

I don't think it's worth upgrading from a X1800XT if he only plays CoD2 at 1280x1024. Both cards mentioned would be a waste at that resolution for CoD2.

Yep, the X1800XT still has a little life left...

ok, thats what i thought, but lets assume that he could sell his X1800XT to a friend for $200, so the upgrade would only cost him about 50 bucks. If he did that, which of these cards should he get?

X1950XT

alright thanks guys, i got exactly what i was looking for.

As far as the waiting process goes, what exactly should he be waiting on? Obviously it has something to do with DX10 coming out, but does that imply that the 8800GTS is going to come down in price or what?

Even a 7900GTX/1900xtx aren't very comfortable playing COD2 at 12x10 with 4x AA, I say this through Xbit's benchies and through personal experience with the 1900xtx(getting in 40s in many maps).

I would recommend a 7950GX2 or 8800GTS for the job.

you're a moron lol
i have a x1900xt @ 1680x1050 and it plays COD2 at max settings great.

But if he does get the X1950XT, try to talk him into investing on a nice WS LCD so that he can play at a resolution more suited to that card 🙂

A 8800GTS to play CoD2 at 1280x1024?!? :Q :Q

If all he plays is CoD2, then he doesn't need to upgrade from the X1800XT. That card is more than capable of handling that game.

if you have to spend money now, 8800 GTS. dont waste your money with anything else. its the only card worth the upgrade. and its also DX10.
but the smartest thing to do would be to tell your uncle to wait till February. ati cards have a habit of being cheaper than nvidia, and you could get a better performing card than an 8800 GTS for the same price.
