7600GS: 256MB ram, 128bit GDDR2, core clock: 550, mem clock 850, 12 pipes

6800XT: 256mb ram, 256bit GDDR3, core clock 350, mem clock 1000, 8 pipes

Compare them yourself (kinda, we don't know DDR2 or DDR or GDDR3 for the 6800XT ram):

I assume you meant 450 clock on the 7600GS, not 550. But even in that case, it doubles the pixel shading and texture processing power of the 6800XT, has 50% more fill rate, but loses out 13.6gb/sec to undoubtedly much higher (possibly 2x) 6800XT memory bandwidth.

So if you're into playing 1280x1024 with 8xAA but all eye candy low or off, the 6800XT is definitely your card. Anywhere else, the 7600GS will utterly crush it.

Just curious, why not add a few bucks and get a 7600GT?

He could be talking about a extreme version of the 7600GS.
Yes this card would kill the 6800XT because it has more pixel shaders/vertext shaders/TMUs compared to the 6800XT. Another thing top note is that even with the extra 13.6gb/sec bandwidth the 6800XT doesnt utilise it properly (notice how the 7600GT with 22.4gb/sec bandwidth performs faster even with AA/AF on in high res situations compared to the 6800GS/GT).

You should go for the 7600GT :)
