Question Which card is better: Radeon HD 6670 or GeForce GT730?

I'm putting together a second-hand setup for my brother out of spare parts. I think the Radeon HD 6670 has 1GB VRAM and a quick google suggests it's DDR5.

The GT730 has 2GB VRAM but I think it's DDR3.

Gaming isn't going to go any higher than 1080p (I doubt that either card could practically do it, but anyway), I've got a spare 1600x900 monitor for him but it's conceivable that he'll upgrade to a nicer screen.

Is there a clear winner without having to go into all the ins and outs of memory capacity and speed?

I'm thinking of going with the GT730 because I'm pretty sure it can do UEFI whereas the 6670 definitely can't. If there's a chance that he'll put in a better graphics card then I think that places his system in a better position overall.

One thing to consider is that neither is getting any more driver updates. But then, both are too slow for modern titles anyway, so it might not matter.

I'd go with the 730. Support for Terascale2 cards is spotty at best with Windows 10. The 730 at least has newer drivers.

The issue with the 6000 series is that it doesn’t support Vulkan or DX12. On the other hand the 730 is a horrible card with almost 0 performance, so it could very well be that the HD 6670 is better. Drivers are old but should still work. If you don’t need VK or DX12 games to run.

Also note because both cards are really old, both of them are EoL for drivers. If you plan on running Windows 11, you may only get basic functionality.

I know you said you're building pc out of spare parts, but honestly, at this point it's almost worth it getting 5600g and cheapest b550 motherboard you can find. It's only going to cost in the low to mid $200's, 5600g APU is going to be faster than either one of those cards and the platform is going to be modern enough to upgrade in the future should your brother want something better.

If you're going the AM4 APU route, there is no reason to get a B550 board. APUs don't support PCIe 4.0, so it's wasted unless you plan on upgrading somewhere down the line.

Any AM4 board will do in a pinch. A320/A520/B450 is equally valid.

Anyhoo, the answer to the OP seemingly (according to the Heaven 2009 benchmark, DX9, high textures, 1080p), is that the 6670 absolutely spanks the GT730: at least double the FPS, maybe triple (the bench is still running, but it's noticeably smoother).

I even built a spare parts PC with a Radeon HD 2600 XT - only used for League but it works. So I don't see the drama about a HD 6670 (!) at all. It's a relatively strong card compared to what I used

I just tossed a 5570 into my wife's PC running 10, works fine.

According to wiki they're both up to H.264 decoding (UVD3 for radeon HD 6000 series, PureVideo 5 for Kepler). Thanks for the reminder of video decoding though, definitely worth checking with regard to older hardware.

I don't know about the 6670, but the 5570 can't do 1080P60 and the Geforce can.

another thing, the Geforce likely uses less power,
since they are both slow and outdated for gaming might be worth deciding on stuff like that..

I used to have a 6670, back in 2010.
It ran older games well, but once I tried Doom 2016 on it, it was unplayable.
Even at modest resolutions, it ran like a slideshow - around 3 fps.
And Doom 2016 is so optimized, it could run on a potato.
(And it's buttery smooth on a 5600G).
