Hi,

Title says it all. I have both cards available to me. Which card is faster?

I have read that the SDR version of the MX is faster than the DDR version (because of the 128 bit bus of the SDR version and a higher clock speed).

Which one should I be using for 3D games?

ss284, What the different in the ddr and the sdr I know its something to do with the memory is it not. I may be wrong. because I'm going to get a new card soon so I would like to know myself.

thanks

WJ:

the SDr board is clocked at 166mhz, with a 128bit memory bus.
the DDR board is clocked at 2 X 143mhz (i think) with a 64 bit memory bus.
i dont know the exact numbers, but the differece in memory bus turns it in the SDR's favor.

The SDR is an effective 166, while the DDR is an effective 143.

FWIW, I don't particularly care for being referred to as a "dumb ass", but I did pick up a Creative Annihilator 2 MX yesterday and installed it tonight and it is rock solid. Blows the old Voodoo 3 3000 out of the water, even in Unreal Tournament. 60 fps @800x600 with 32 bit color. Really looks nice. I realize the Prophet is probably faster, since it is clocked at 183 MHz vs the 143 Mhz of the Creative, but I thought maybe the DDR memory might help, and I like things that don't generate too much heat in my case. I am quite pleased with my CLA2MX, and for the $103+ they charged me for it at BestBuy (after 20% off coupon from Tribes 2 website) I think it is a bargain. Anybody need a 6 month old never overclocked Voodoo 3 PCI card?

I think SDR board will be nicer that DDR board. I have a CLA2MX, and I found it's performance doesn't turn out to be good when I used 3DMark2000 to test its performance. The result was pretty low, even lower than my previous Viper V770. I've considered to get a Prophet MX.

I ran 3DMark against both cards tonight, the CL MX 32MB DDR scored 600 points lower than the Prophet II MX 32MB SDR (CL - 4350 Prophet - 4950).

Decided to keep the Prophet II even though it costs about $50 more.

Thanks for the advice.

Vman, How did you overclock the memory? Have you added any cooling to your CLA2MX? I have just installed mine and haven't tried any tweaks yet. But at default, I have to say I am pleased with the card. However, faster is usually better as long as it is still stable. How did overclocking the memory affect the overall performance?

370 still equals 185, while most SDR cards can overclock higer than 200.My old prophet MX did 220.

kicked the bejesus out of that creative card
