Which car is more manly? MR2 Spyder or Miata?

I personally would choose the MR2 Spyder but I still can't believe how much Toyota charges for one of those little cars new. I dunno how much a used one cost but I can only imagine its still pretty expensive. If money were the issue i'd go for the Miata and put a supercharger on it later.

So which one is more manly, mr2 spyder or miata?

Of course, in an ideal world, I would love an S2000.

But I'd like to stay under $15k.

Thanks

maybe you're so manly it doesn't even matter what car you drive..?

MR2 + celica GTS swap=poor man's Elise

I thought the old MR2's came with the Celica GTS engines stock. All Toyota did was stick a turbo on the 2.0l models

Sorry, meant the new ones. I don't know if it's the case the old MR2s uses the old Celica GTS engines. That sounds about right though, since they're both 2.0s.

The current celica GTS uses a 1.8L called the 2zzge, which is the same engine Lotus uses in their Elise. Incidentally, the Elise is also a midengined roadster hence a current style MR2+2zz=poor man's elise.

MkII MR2s used the 3S-GTE (2.0L Turbo) and 5S-FE (N/A 2.2L).

The 2zzge is a new motor. I'm not huge on it as I don't really care fo the C-GTS, but from what I've read its a great motor for light vehicles.

That concludes todays MR2 lesson. Please keep in mind that MKII Turbos in good condition are hard to find without paying an arm and a leg.

As far as the OP goes, its all personal preference. Drive both and see which you like. Just don't brake in a corner with the MR-S unless you want to find out how embarassing it is to spin in the middle of traffic.

Actually, trucks are pretty gay...I honestly had a gay guy go over that with me. It goes along with the whole steelworker/buff manly man thing.

As for the original question...get a 1989 MR2, drop in a 20v blacktop and turbocharge it.

Yeah, the Miata is real effeminate. 😛

Note: not my car

Yeah, small roadsters have a stigma about them but they perform brilliantly. As long as you're not driving around with your wrist bent out the window, who cares? Don't base your decision on which car is "more manly". My vote goes for the miata as it has more luggage space and aftermarket support. But I'm sure you'd be happy with an mr2 as well.

WOW!!! First manly miata I saw ever!

I had an MR2, the catalytic converter melted and the entire exhaust system had to be replaced. It was still under warranty and had done less than 40k miles. The mechanic told me they'd had another one do the same thing a few months back. Main problem with the MR2 is lack of power, needs a turbo but I couldn't be arsed to mod it. Brakes, steering and handling all superb, especially compared to the outhouse I'm driving now. I just remembered the speakers are sh1t.

*this was the 2000 model, the more angular shape with the Porsche-looking headlights.

Fcuk knows what a Miata is but it sounds like a$$.

where's the option for neither? both cars are very feminine. in fact, I can't think of a small roadster that isn't.

For $15k, you can a C4 Corvette roadster or a newer Camaro Z-28 convertible.

the words miata and manly dont belong in the same sentence

i vote 5th gen prelude, great styling, fun to drive, and its a honda, you cant go wrong.
and they are very affordable (just bought one myself)

Why does everyone still call the new "MR2" Spyder an MR2? Have you looked at them, they aren't called MR2 any more, its called "MRS".

That being said, neither car is IN THE LEAST, manly. Both are two seat sports car's for women if you ask me. I'd get an S2000 instead

Really?

Well thats what I thought. Since its a spyder, it would make sense that the "S" in MR-S is for Spyder. So what is the MR-S then, the hopped up version?

UPDATE EDIT: Looking HERE and at other info around the web, it seems they changed the name when it came to market in the US. I never really kept track of it after being announced in Japan. Because even at all of the auto shows they unveiled it at, they referred to it as the MR-Spyder. Oh well, I stand corrected irregardless, but it was an easy mistake to make.

if you're going to spend 15k, don't want to modify your car, don't want ANY storage space, and have a pretty rare car, get the MR2-S. if you want to pay LESS, get a car that is easily modified for exceptional power and handling, is VERY competitive in SCCA Solo II autocrosses, and is more "girly" to most people, get a Miata. I've spent around 6000 including intial purchase and modifications of my 96 Miata and now it can run 1.1g on the skidpad (coilovers with r comps), 0-60 in low 6's, and be a decent daily driver to boot. Best bang for the buck.

I don't know how anyone can sit in those things. My dad's g/f bought a Spyder and damn those things are tiny. I'm not that tall only 6' and I just could get comfortable in it. Why not get something with a convertible top that is a little bigger. Or if you want cheap and quick get a motorcycle.

Yes we all know how much you love import cars.

I love import cars, mainly Japanese cars. I also love Chevy since I was raised as a Chevy kid. But I completely agree with him on the feminine thing. The only exception is the S2000 in my mind, there is just something masculine about a 120 HP/L 9000rpm 4 banger. Or should I say geeky, considering its an engineering marvel of an engine.

The most feminine cars IMO are almost all convertable roadsters. Miata, Beatle, MR-S, CLK, and Sebring. The most girly being the Sebring, Beatle and Miata. With the othes coming in close behind. The BMW Z3 is pretty girly too, but not as much and about where the S2000 is in my mind. I definetely agree though, all those TINY little roadsters are pretty girly. The beatle doesn't fit in there with other "roadsters" but is just TOO girly not to be mentioned. Seriously, if I see a guy driving a Beatle, I automatically think he is gay. Espcially if its a convertable.
