Which car has the best gearbox? (cars under $60k)

i've only driven a honda stick (92 accord) and it as pretty fun. With regards to auto, since I'm only 18, I really can't answer that yet.

I've driven the Audi A4, and it's ok, but not as nice feeling as the Saab. The WRX is a ton if fun to drive, but it's a much harsher gearbox.

I own a WRX, and I'll be the first to say that the 5-speed is a POS gearbox. It's like Subaru forgot to put synchros in it at the factory. The Getrag-built STi 6-speed is a whole other animal though.
VW/Audi gearboxes tend to have kind of a mushy feel. IIRC the Saab 9-3 gearbox is built by Opel.

if you taking about feeling your hand get from shifting gear; I must say NOT nissan... well, at least not Sentra and Altima. omg they are horrible, its like stirring a thick beef stew and your spoon hit a bone when the gear engaged.
second is the new toyotas, (celica, matrix, corolla), it's like shifting a Logitech shift knob. there's no feel to it.

meanwhile, my cousin "borrowed" an NSX from a friend and I got to sat in it. Boy that thing feels gOOOOD... your fingers can feel the gears grinding when you shift. 🙂

Agree - honda certainly has the best. Precise, light, and a pleasure to shift. The wost I've ever driven has been Nissan. I liekn shifting to rubbing two cinder blocks together in the Sentra Spec-V

I have driven a couple Honda's and they all do have really nice gearboxes. The only car I drove that I thought had a better gearbox was a BMW 330.

I have not driven an RSX or an S2000, so I have no idea what to expect from those (The honda's I have driven with manuals have been old and new accords and civics and one prelude).

Yeah mitsubishi's have sorta thst idea in their 'Sportronic' transmission. I own a 2003 eclipse and It's STIFF...i owned a GSX and i loved it's feel though. then i totaled it going 125 =/

OK....whatever. Drive a 240Z w 440+HP/ 435ft-lb mated to a built T56 w/ R200 rear. You will understand.

The [new] Altima SE-R has a pretty good gearbox. Hondas are decent. I like the feel of short-throw shifters... Dieselgeek with side to side reduction on the R32.

Generally Honda, Mazda, and BMW manuals are pretty good IMO.

There also is a significant difference between the RSX/TSX manuals, the TL/Accord V6 manuals, and the S2000. The S2000 has the shortest, most direct throws and IMO is the best shifter IF you're accurate and have good technique. However, lots of sloppy, ham-fisted drivers have a lot of issues with the S2K box as it will crunch and grind if you're not precise.

The Miata and RX-8 shifters are very close (I believe they're made by the same company in Japan as the S2K box).

BMW boxes are also pretty good, but the E46 M3 felt like it had longer throws and wasn't as snick-snick as the S2k box.

The WRX (non-STI), Nissans, Toyota, VW/Audi boxes I've driven have been of varying quality and not in the same league as the above.
