which camp are you in? blu-ray or HDDVD?

I own both, but I will buy Blu-Ray first because of my player capabilities (particularly analog outs, so that I can play TrueHD, DTS HD, or PCM 5.1). I wouldn't have a hard preference if I hadn't bought the BD player first (8 months ago, it seemed obvious Sony would win. Now it's not so obvious.)

All else being equal, the extra capacity of BD would make me support it...but Sony's incompetence and arrogance offsets it, so I'm pretty neutral on who wins overall.

this poll makes no sense. who would own a single HD player and be rooting for the other format to win. 😕

I bet the people who have both players but voted for blu picked up an HD DVD player when they got down to $99. 😀

OP, you need to stipulate if the players are stand alone or integrated into a gaming console.

I voted "HDDVD - I own a HDDVD player". However, I am format neutral. Both formats are good. When I wanted to buy an HD format, HD DVD was at a better price point...less expensive. That's all.

I don't see any reason to get into that crap about whether your player is a standalone or not. It just muddies the issue. And if someone is in here voting, they clearly aren't one of the people who bought a PS3 with no intention of playing BD movies on it...so there you go.

HD-DVD player owner (with movies) .. Would pick up a PS3 for blu-ray if it had some better games out (I still may if more games come out)

HD DVD player bought at the end of Oct.
Have 12 movies so far with 2 more pre ordered...... Bourne Ultimatum and the Harry Potter set. (6 movies really)

can't wait for Ultimatum.

I am also considering buying Pan's Labyrinth when that comes out(own it on DVD). That movie would look amazing in HD.

exactly my situation and thoughts 🙂

I have both players in a PC. It was cheaper than buying both separately. So what I will do is buy whatever movies come out on either format. Buying Blu-Ray first over HD DVD for dual format releases. Why? Because although it's probably not even an issue, I like the idea that Blu-Ray disks are thicker and have a more resistant coating. Secondly, I like the Blue box better than Red. I do feel that Blu-Ray has a better technology and it has nothing to do with video quality or capabilities. It just seems more forward thinking than HD DVD. However, If HD DVD wins eventually I won't be sad. I have both players.

I got a PS3 so I'm with Blu-Ray, but HDDVD sure has some tempting titles, i.e. the bourne trilogy, Transformers

Neither, I'm waiting out this stupid war.

Go ahead while I enjoy HD movies right now. 😀
😀

I tried to join the HDDVD side, but Walmart had sold out. I'm waiting, at least for now.

I'm teasing...I just love poking at people who won't move up in technology. People still holding on to VHS and those who claim that a 37" CRT from 8 years ago which is fading badly and has alot of snow on the picture looks better than a 32" 720p LCD from Sharp because the CRT is bigger bring a smile to my face because they are so blissfully unaware of everything.

Playing a movie on a small pc monitor is like playing a game on a cell phone.
I'll take my 50" Plasma, ent. sys. and an HD DVD player over a player that can play both formats on a 22"-30" pc monitor with Klip-skee or low/blows speakers anyday.

I'll live with the consequences if it all goes Blu-Ray and won't be sad **cough cough/lie lie**

PS: Who wants to sit in a computer chair and watch a 2+ hour movie? Not I! I'd prefer a 9'+ couch I can stretch out on and relax.

well my 27" Philips flat-screen CRT (and not even progressive scan) destroys my Sharp 32" LC32D41U in terms of color reproduction and saturation and realistic depiction of dark scenes due to typical CRT black levels and contrast ratio. 😛
in terms of resolution and sharpness? no. It had sharp picture, but resolution and LCD's are better in that regard. If I could have that Philips TV in HD, widescreen and a few inches bigger? I'd take it in a heartbeat (and be 720p. 1080i only causes issues for things like PS3's, and is why I didn't go with one of those HD CRTs, like Samsung's).

I miss the IQ of good CRTs. 🙁 New flat-panel technologies need to be cheap like CRTs and match the IQ, and be HD. I demand that. Now.

Who the fuck says I'm using my monitor for movies?! Who says I'm using my PC speakers? !

Don't ASSume...

In fact I output via HDMI to a HDTV and use analog outs to the 5.1 inputs on a receiver. My sub is a Velodyne SPL-1000R (no crap bass here).
