I am looking for something compact; something that would fit in my pocket. Quality is important and I'm looking to spend ~$400-500.

What specs are you looking for? Eg: manual controls, Image stabilization, zoom multiplier. A good recommendation is Canon's SD series. My sister has been happy with the SD800 IS I got her about a year ago.

IS would be a requirement while manual controls would be a bonus. I would think a 3x zoom should suffice.

with your budget, you have plenty of choices man.

Canon SD-870, Sony T-300, Fujitsu F100fd just to name a few, and except the Sony the other two are well within $300.

anything larger may deem to be "compact", but will not fit in pocket.
perhaps if you could go visit a store and take a look of the actual size to get a feel of how "compact" you want, because numbers can be deceiving.

well the current top-of-the-line point-and-shoot from Canon is the G9. it's a nice point-and-shoot, particularly because it offers SLR-like control.

And the top of the line Nikon point/shoot is the P5100. The G9 is a better camera but it also costs twice as much. I've been looking into point/shoot recently and just bought the Canon 890 IS about an hour ago. It is the latest camera to come out of Canon. Only problem is there are NO reviews of the new Canons anywhere on the net.

Both the Canon G9 and the Nikon P5100 can shoot fully manual, aperture and shutter priority.
