Yeah, my teacher like would allow my graphing calculator on some tests but not others.. So yeah, it stunk using a calculator that I didn't even know how to use on half the tests.

I have 1 more semester left in undergrad engineering and the TI-85(which i've had since 10th grade) has been able to do everything i have needed to do.

I just got a 83plus for my math classes but I'm thinking of getting an 89 because it can do boolean algebra, or so I was told, and that would come in handy in my digital electronics class.

the ti-89 rules
it can solve almost any problem
though you may not need it, it is a wise investment
and as previously mentioned, if you're not allowed to use the calculator on a test, you probably won't need it
if you're absolutely positive you won't go any farther with math, then save a couple of bucks and get the 83 or 86

I'm very happy with my TI-89. It's very spacious memory, speed, and "pretty print" are all great features, though I've not quite figured out the point of the 3D graphing yet - other than to impress friends with lesser models of calculators. :)

Though I must agree with what the others here have said (personally, I finished Algebra 2 last school year), in that the 89 is way more power than what is needed for most high school stuff, but from what I've been told, you'll appreciate your investment when you get into calculus stuffs.

Also, (especially for algebra and other "simpler" problems) be sure not to abuse the power of such a calculator - if you do, your brain cells will wither from lack of mental exercise, and if your calculator's batteries suddenly decide to go the way of the dodo, or your teacher decrees that you won't be able to use the calculator on a test, you'll be screwed. ;)

Okay basically we had to get 83+'s for math class last year. I got lazy and used it to solve all my problems(mostly doing fucntions in 11th grade) I had to sort of relern it all this year and screwed up the begining of the year because i could do anything without it. DO NOT LET THE CALCULATOR DO YOUR WORK. do you homework without it, use it for tests where time is limited, you'l be happy you did this later.

Some people call them "cars" or "trucks;" I call them "dimensional transmogrifiers" because they change three-dimensional cats into two-dimensional ones.

What in the world?

I put my calculator away when I went to college if that tells you anything. I use the TI-30 now.

Im a senior in highschool right now and currently taking AP Calculus AB. The text book and the course go along a lot better with an ti-89; there are some things you can do on an 89 you simply can't on 83s or 86s.

From my past experience in pre-calc, I can say that an 89 would have been a lot better than my current 83+, and that my 83+ was easier to use than the 86. (Almost anyone whos had the 86 at my school says its not as good as the 83+ as far as useability and easability)

If you also plan to go into statistics, the 83+ would be a much better choice than the 86(again, what my friends who took stats said).

And assuming you will go onto more advanced levels of math, the 89 will "last" you the longest, and is very helpful in college as well.

Right now, Target has the TI-89 for 129.99. What you can do is price match with staples or another office store and get it for less (110% gaurantee thingy), and possibly even use a coupon to make it a bragian.

IMO, get the 89.

The main difference (as in software and what it can do. Not memory) between the Ti 89 and the 92 is one comes prepackaged with Cabri Geometry and one doesn't. You can buy it seperately though. Has anyone used it before?

I wish I had known last weekend you were in the market for a TI. I saw 1-2 TI models on sale at CostCo B&M last weekend, from what I remember they were a lot cheaper than retail prices.

So before you buy, check out your local CostCo if you can.

thanks rossman, unfortunately there aren't any costco's around here.... I think when I get one I'll just go for the usual "anandtech hot deals" strategy and rip off staples.... it's pricematch then bust out a coupon time! :)

Another vote for the HP49G. If your doing any sort of engineering or complex equations, then it can't be beat. (Unless you want to use an iPAQ or something). TI's prettyprint doesn't hold a candle to the 49's. I'll give the TI the nod for ease of use and learning curve, but HP's RPN is very nice. Once you get used to the 49 it's much faster to use than the TI's. My only real complaint about the 49 is the rubber keys are hard to push and it slows my typing.

Many colleges are starting to make the TI-89 the standard. Sucks for my friend:p

83/86 don't do enough
92 has a QWERTY keyboard, therefore "too" advanced

Many of the nicer HP calculators aren't allowed..

The 82 and it's mild upgrade the 83 are nothing to special pretty basic graphers really.

The Ti-85 (I have) and it's mild upgrade the 86 (my roommate has) are far far better. They are much more worth the money.

The Ti-89 is pretty much a small computer algerbra system...however I like a few others feel it's not to good for really basic stuff. If you don't need it's really advanced features I wouldn't use it, besides it was originally built as the Ti-92 with full keyboard...and some of the functions are pretty annoying to use without the proper qwerty KB.

I quite like the Ti85/86 level. The 89/92 level are questionable if they will be allowed in tests and what not, I'd much rather juse get Maple or Matlab, and they try to cram to much into a "calculator" anyways.

Hell even the Ti85 has a lot of stuff on it, I have a little "Scientific" casio that I use for a lot of little stuff.

I just got a TI-89 about a week ago, and I love it. Echoing the others, do not abuse its power though. In my eyes, it's worth it over the TI-83. It's not a problem for me if a teacher won't let me use it for a test, as my school has TI-83+'s available for use, plus i've got my trusty old TI-34 for use as well. It will last you throughout college. College entry tests such as SAT allow it.
