Which cable router?

I currently have a cable modem and two pc's connected vai a hub. I am paying for an extra ip. I now have 2 more pc's I would like to have internet access. I was told by a friend of mine, what I would cancel that extra ip, and get a cable router inplace of the hub and I could have my four pc's be able to access the web. I plan on making one of my pc's a web/ftp server. I also need all four pc to be able to access eath others shared files. All four pc's have a ethernet card and I have Cat5 wires (RJ45) in place.

So which cable router would allow me to do this? I have seen cable routers on pricewatch starting at $25.

Thanks for any input/advice.

Im using the Linksys and am quite pleased. You can get them with wireless access points embedded too if that interests you.

Hmm, If you are going to run an FTP/web server, why not continue to pay for your second IP and connect that computer
directly to the cable modem, then use a a router for all other computers. This way, you don't have to mess with port
forwarding and you can make the computers hooked to the router more secure, while still having full access to your ftp/web server.

I really can't comment on those littel stand alone boxes you can buy, but I have had excellent luck with the Freesco project.
Essentially Freesco allows you to take an older computer(386 or better) with two NICS and it emulates a cisco router. If you
have the hardware all ready it is FREE!!

Freesco link two

May not be for you, but I think that if you are looking for router solutions, you at least owe it to yourself to check it out. I think it
is a better solution than the routers that places like best buy sell, and did I mention that it is FREE?

Edit:
Just noticed this in FS/T forums: cheap computers that would work great for FREESCO
That P166 system would do nicely.

Thanks for the replies. I don't have an old pc :-( I would have to get one or put one together.....The linksys is availabe at BB for $99 the 4 port one. I think I will just pick one up and see how it works.

Thanks

I have friends with D-Links and Linksys routers, I personally have the Linksys from BB and I like it over the D-Links. just my 2c

Thanks for in input. Just got back from BB with my new 4 port router 🙂 plugged eveything in, rebooted all the pc's and everything is working perfectly. I still have to read the manual about some of the advanced setup options and what they do...

Thanks to everyone for the input.

What router did you get 🙂

I have a linksys 1 port, then have my switch (which I already had) hooked up to it... I really do like linksys' router 🙂

I got the Linksys 4 port router for $99 from BB. I have a 5 port workgroup hub from linksys as well. I can connect up to 9 pc's now 🙂

I've got a linksys router, which has given me no problems. Its a 4 port router, and I'v got a 4 port switch in my room to take care of my computers. The router has 1. my moms computer 2. my dads computer 3. my sisters computer 4. uplink to my switch. The switch has 1. Destkop 2. Laptop location next to computer 3. Laptop location on bed

Sweet setup.

I need more network cables now for remote location inside the house for my laptops...maybe bathroom? hehe
