which cable modem?

so i'm moving and going from dsl to cable. and since i'll be living there for at least a year, it's worth buying a cable modem. but which one?

i'll probably buy off newegg, which has 3. they're all compatible with the cable i'll be getting.

Linksys BEFCMU10 ver.2 $79
Motorola (Surfboard) SB4200 $71
DLink DCM-200 $66-20mib=46

i'm inclined to go with dlink for price. anyone have any comments/experiences before i jump in?

 
Motorola SB4200, I've got one, works great. Supposedly it handles bad line conditions better than others. It's got a nifty standby button too.
 
I have Motorola at home and no problems with it. I'd say you're only two real requirements should be ethernet interface and DOCSIS 1.0 compliance--DOCSIS 1.1 compliance is even better. Besides that, a cable modem is pretty much a cable modem, just like ethernet cards vs. ethernet cards, unless of course, someone has a horror story to tell about a particular brand. My vote goes for whatever is cheapest.
 
yep, i ended up buying a cable modem before our local cable company started renting'em, and in the research i did, modem's a modem, go for the cheapest. best thing, no moving parts. :-D just look for extras such as USB2.0 or Firewire.

both the linksys and motorola will do concatenation out of the box. i've also found that the dlink has some relaibility issues, is truely as butt ulgy as it gets.

personally i recommend

motorola SB4200(firmware 4.4.2 and up)
toshiba PCX2200 and or PCX2500
terayon
linksys

brands i do not recommend

3Com

I use the 3Com sharkfin one(Rebadged motorola?)

I've had it for roughly 2+ years and it hasnt given me any problems, not to mention it is pretty damn fast.

so i'm between motorola and dlink. but i'm leaning towards motorola because everyone speaks highly of it above the rest. if anyone can attest to dlink being just fine, please say so (saving $25 would be nice).

at the same time, i've been told that renting might be a better option, because you effectively get unlimited warranty. anyone had problems with cable modems breaking on them? would renting be worth that peace of mind/insurance?
 
Another vote for Motorola...I've been using an SB4100 for the past two or so years...no problemos. I imagine the SB4200 to be as good if not better.

It has a nice 'undocumented feature' that allows you to access internal logs and maintenance info aka Configuration Manager (uptime, uplink/downlink status, MAC adx, etc.) via a web browser using the following URL: http://192.168.100.1 Not all vendors provide this kind of utility...
 
yet another vote for the motorola.

I've been using the 4100 for over a year and the only problems i've had were connection related, not the modems fault.
 
Some of the Motorola 4200 series modems have problems when they are connected to Linksys routers. Check out dslreports.com forums.
