I was just watching a few videos on YouTube. And as everyday it was slow and buggy. This got me thinking, do some browsers perform better in playing flash video. Usually my experience is that chrome handles flash better than FF based browser(WF, PM etc). Your opinions?

Also, some YT specific issues. Has it ever happened with you that the video quality suddenly jumped to something like 720p in the middle of the playback. It happens to me and its irritating. Also seek doesn't work and is as buggy as hell.

Youtube videos start in an auto setting, so they can change without your input. You can change this by selection the quality for the video manually.

The browser question is hard to answer because flash is updated all the time (like some browsers are). The combo that works great this week may be outshined by another browser next week.

I'd guess Chrome is better, but browser specific bugs popup all the time, and it can hit any browser. I prefer html5 when possible. Flash can't die soon enough.

You're comparing apples to oranges since flash for chrome uses a different API than the flash for firefox, et al.

On a related note, I switched to using the HTML5 version of YouTube and it runs a lot better. No more random sad face plugin crashes or extreme lagginess with a bunch of videos open. The bonus is that videos can be sped up to 2x, excellent for long talks/presentations.

The internet is more complicated than companies just giving everyone carte blanche access to everything? Who would've guessed? :D

The OP has a pretty easy way of testing it though, just install another browser and try a youtube video. Worst case it still sucks and they uninstall the extra browser. Streaming flash video problems could be anything from the plugin, to the browser, to video card issues, to things at the network level.

Personally, I've had great experiences with firefox in recent years. Chrome has issues sometimes partly because they use their own flash build.

okay after reading the replies i decided to use the HTML5 version of YouTube. I thought that since it wouldn't require flash so i disabled the flash plugin. but now it won't play. It tells me that flash plugin isn't installed. Do they need flash even after switching to HTML5?

Any of the main browsers should do just fine, and any of the browsers that are built off the same technology. For example, Chrome is fine for it, as are Opera and torch browser.

I don't know why so many people have trouble with YouTube. I have zero trouble at all! Is HTML 5 in FF 19? I tried upgrading, but had to revert because some of my add-ons didn't work.

I also think it could be due to their ISP. I used to have some loading issues until i switched and at work where we have a very fast network, it is never an issue.

Thanks, I just opted in for the trial, F-ing flash, just started a thread over in Windows software, here's what happened last night,... "Is it me or is Flash an ongoing POS. Was watching some vid's on YT last night when not only did it not play the entire system froze for a second then went to BSOD then re-booted on it's own. I'm running the latest, Flash version, FF 22.0, Radeon 4830 with the latest catalyst driver's, somewhat outdated E8400@3.6ghz/4Gb RAM/Gigabyte MB, ICH7 chipset, Kingston 120GB SSD. any ideas, suggestions? (besides Flash sucks, live with it!)..

Hard to say. Could be Flash, a driver issue, or just bad luck. If it continues, try narrowing it down, and try eliminating as much Flash as you can. Do you *really* need to watch that video?

I watched a LiveLeak video today with Flash disabled. Instead of the video playing, I was prompted to watch it in VLC. That was just grand :^)

Here's a couple Firefox addons you may find useful. I'm new to these, so I haven't firmed up an opinion, but no real problems so far.

FlashDisable - Simply a button on the browser that toggles the Flash plugin on and off. If you keep Flash off until you need it, it may help force html5 on some sites, and eliminate some web annoyances. If you need it, the page has to be refreshed to see the content after toggling it on.

YouTube Flash To HTML5 Converter - Flash must be disabled for this to work(use button above). Converts Youtube Flash to html5. Seems to work on embedded videos in forums and stuff. Still testing

OK, thanks I'll give it a shot, I do like YT for a number of reasons beyond amusement, there is an auto parts place that actually has a video for installing the parts it sells, very useful. I've also found interesting documentaries from time to time..

Well streaming video via flash IS QUITE CPU INTENSIVE!! (Any browser could have problems if the CPU cant handle it,etc)

The worst/most unreliable way to stream video!!
