for the last 4 or 5 years I have used the standard MOBIL(conventional dino) oil in 5w30 or 10w30, I don't think it is the same oil it used to be and stopped using it.
I know others that say the same thing, and they switched also. the thing I notice the first 500 miles or so it doesn't burn a drop then it starts to burn and you have to add and it just get worse with oil consumbtion till you change it. I think it breaks down way to fast. others have the same results as me that's why they switched oil brands, and they were using it in different engines.

So which brand if dino oil do you think is best?

I put penzoil in this time, I pulled my bass boat in the heat for about 500 miles , overdrive wasn't used all the time, so far no oil was burned but it is to soon tell if it's better than mobil.

Look here Read some of the UOA's(Used Oil Analysis) and VOA's(Virgin Oil Analysis). The Car and Truck Gas Engine oil forum on that site is great as well. Hell it's all good. I've learned a ton since I started reading those boards.

Looks to me as far as Dino Juice goes either Chevron or Pennzoil is the best.

Damn informative forums....give them a read. Thanks again to Eli for pointing them out to me.

I use Mobil 1 in my 94 Nissan Maxima and I am very impressed with it. If I change the oil within 3000 miles it is considerably cleaner that regular motor oil and if I change it at around 5000, it looks like standard oils. I do it every 4000 miles as it happens.

Wasting your $ if you ask me. Unless you are going to take advantage of the extended drain intervals, 7500+ miles or more, then you are just throwing your $ away on a synthetic.

No doubt about the oil filters....Fram sucks ass. I stick with Wix or Purolator.

Wix and Purolator are good, so are Napa Gold, Mobil1, STP, Bosch, and even the Tech2000 at wal-mart.

I use STP at my shop as I get a discount since I by them by the case sometimes.

A buddy of mine has been trying to get me to switch to STP filters. I've been doing some research and they are made by Champion Labs, which makes a LOT of brands(including the Mobil 1, Bosch and Tech 2000), and they look like a decent filter. I went to AutoZone earlier today and was looking at them and they look like a good solid filter and for $2.99 they are a steal. I bought one to try, gonna cut it open after an oil change and see how it looks. I do have to say that after getting home and comparing it to a Wix it doesn't seem to be as heavy. Don't know that means anything, but the Wix just seems more solid. I'm thinking of picking up a NAPA Gold since Wix makes those and they are nearly $2 cheaper. I bought a couple of STP air filters while I was there. They look very well made and are cheap as hell. Brought them home and compared to the Purolator air filter I had as a spare and the STP looks to be better quality than the Purolator. Looks like I have a new brand of air filters to keep in my garage from now on.

By the way....after doing some reading it seems that Fram builds the following brands of filters:
Pennzoil(May change since Shell now owns Pennzoil. Read something that said they were switching to Champion)
Quaker State(May change now that Shell owns Quaker State. Read something that said they were switching to Champion)
Some Motorcraft
Aftermarket Mopar. OEM is made by Champion. Why they use 2 different manufactures I have no idea.

Those are now on my stay the hell away from list. If Shell does indeed switch the Pennzoil and QS filters to being made by Champion they will most likely come off my list.

AMSOil is one of the best engine oil's money can buy.

Mobil1 is probably the best widely available.

Regardless of what you chose, the oil filter that you use is quite possibly more important than the oil you use. Even the best space program, military backed government certified oil is worthless if it has solid particulates in it.

IMO, it is worth it to use synthetic.. especially if it's the cheaper kinds, if not just for the peace of mind alone. Your engine will run cooler, and you won't have to worry if you go over the 3,000 mile "limit".

Don't forget about your air filter, also. It is the first line of defense; anything that gets passed it will end up in your oil.

I am not so sure syn is the way to go for me, my ford 4.6 has about 146,000 miles on it, it doesn't leak very much , just a little at the valve covers, no leaks else were. but burns some after 500 miles on a oil change. I think it has a slight amount of blow-by, but I think most of the oil goes by the valve guides

I usually use napa gold filters

It really doesen't matter your milage, unless your engine leaks like a sieve..

But you're probably right, it isn't going to make much difference at this point.

Yea I forgot to mentention that some filters are made by Fram, with out the Fram name to warn you.
I think honda has a deal for Fram to make some of their filters. So if you buy your filters from the honda dealer make sure you check them out. I hope honda holds them up to a higher standard then the junk they make for the public.

But for me 3000miles using Mobil 10W30 and 5000miles using Mobil1 10W30. But the filter is just as important as the oil, if not more so.

Yep...I read that about Honda and Fram last night. Supposedly you can still get Honda filters that are non Fram and made in Japan if you go to the right dealer. Just depends on what channel the dealer orders his filters from.
