Well a FIFTH choice may have just been introduced! :)

Probably the reason for some of the dvd burner price drops.

I decided to go with Pioneer A06. Wanted the DRU500A, but the DVD+R write speed is only 2.4X at default. Although the Sony has been around longer and has 8mb buffer, Pioneer's 4X DVD+R write speed was more important to me.

Thanks everyone.
Dude, all you do is flash the Sony DRU500A with the new firmware and it will bring the DVD+R burning speed to 4X.

I read somewhere that even after flashing, it doesn't always write at speed 4X. Might show that it is writing at 4X but actually writing at 2.4X.

Can the firmware be downloaded at Sony website?
Yep. ;)

+ is useless, so might as well get a good cheap drive and save some cash on media.
Please, cut the crap of "+R is worthless!" Just because YOU don't have a use for it, doesn't mean it is worthless. With dual format drives, you have the option to use +R/RW when -R/RW doesn't work. I wouldn't invest $130 on a drive (A05)that will limit me. That's $130 too much. ;)

What about the software bundles, anyone got comments there? And anyone know where the Sony 510A is available in black?

I haven't seen one in black, only the DRU500A in black.

Thanks Jack for the link.

No the DW-U12A is the OEM version of DRU-500AX and hence it won't support 4x DVD+RW and 16x CD-RW.
DW-U14A is the OEM version of DRU-510A.
Check out the link and say that again. ;)

Sure I can because:

DW-U10A=OEM DRU-500A
DW-U12A=OEM DRU-500AX
DW-U14A=OEM DRU-510A

The links go to Buffalo Japan that sells the OEM versions. The site is in Japanese but check the reference to the model numbers and compare the specifications with Sony's retail versions. You can also check the firmware page if you need more "proof".

Please, step away from the keyboard. You have NO idea what you are talking about! Did you even click on the link I gave you? It clearly states the DW-U12A is the DRU-510A. After I posted a link in ENGLISH, you post a link in Japanese?

The DRU-500A and DRU-500AX are basically the same drive! The only difference is a firmware update. Once you update the DRU-500A, it performs just like a DRU-500AX. The DRU-500AX is just the DRU-500A with the updated firmware. The DW-U10A IS the OEM version of the DRU500A/AX. The DWU-12A IS the OEM version of the DRU-510A. DO you REALLY want me to give you a list of links showing the above. And it ain't gonna be in Japanese!

And that firmware link you gave me, I wouldn't trust them with those hacked firmwares as they have their facts mixed up. Check out what it says about the DW-U12A, OEM version of the DRU-500A. I thought you said it was the OEM version of the DRU-500AX?

If the Sony DW-U12A is the OEM version of Sony DRU510A, this makes my choice a no brainer. Thanks!

Yes I DO know what I'm talking about but sure if you want people to buy a DW-U12A and then get disappointed when they can't burn DVD+RW in 4x (or CD-RW in 16x), sure go ahead I don't give a sh*t. And yes I would love to see some official links to Sony's site saying that the DW-U12A is a DRU-510A because I for sure don't trust some yahoo shops that don't know anything about DVD burners...

Oh yeah and can you explain how "Coolio 2003" in this thread could buy a Vaio computer with a DW-U12A in the beginning of February long before the DRU-510A or any other 4x DVD+RW drive was out?

But you're right that the DRU-500A and DRU-500AX is the same drive but for the OEM version of DRU-500A, the DW-U10A, Sony has AFAIK not released the 4x DVD+R firmware update hence it's limited to 2.4x DVD+R write speed if you don't flash it with a hacked DRU-500A(X) firmware update.

Sony DW-U12A (4X DVD+RW and 16X CD-RW). Oh, but I guess this shop is wrong too?

Over here in Europe Belzer is correct the U12A is just the oem 500AX, some shops have been caught out selling thr U12A as an oem 510A and annoyed a few people. I'll have to dig out the thread where some people was a bit unhappy with their new drives not doing what the shop claimed. Could quite easily different in different parts of the world going on past experience.

I'm probably gonna get for the pioneer 106, as two companies over here in the UK are having a little pricing war and its currently £128.99 and dropping :)

I have the Sony DRU 500ax , just picked up a TDK indi DVD was 299.00 with a 30 mail in rebate.
I bought the TDK because it's black in color and sold my Sony to my mother in law.
The TDK works great even with the smaller buffer but the software sucks, Sony's is much better.
