I put in a vote for Onkyo. Can't really go wrong with one. I have the HTS8230 5.1 (? weird model number. I believe it was equivelent to the S530?), it was on sale for $199 down from $279 a couple years ago. I just upgraded my fronts about a week ago, and will be purchasing the matching center channel soon, too. It has served me well this past two years, and I basically felt the need for bigger, faster, better, louder. That, and the included center channel is starting to sound a little hollow :p

I went into fry's today, those polk r50's sound really good. So for a starter system, I think I'm going to forgo the sony and go with the SR304S for $99 and pick up 2 polk R50's for $120 + ship

Looks like I might spend around $250 for a decent starter system

I like the Polk R50 and M10 sound as well. You might want get a budget sub like the BIC H100 to get a lower extension.

sadly, the budget doesn't call for a sub just yet, although that will be the next purchase.

I plan on heading over to CC w/ the fry's ad to get the reciever for $89

Got your PM

This would be a good way to go.

Replying to the PM question - if you're worried about appreciating the sound of speakers, it would be a good idea to try some different ones out to see what kind of difference you personally notice. Going from little HTIB speakers to something like the Polks should be a fairly significant jump and you should be able to notice it even if you have concerns about not being able to.

A sub will make a lot of difference, but if this is a system you can add to over time, getting a receiver + two speakers for now would be a great start. You'll want a sub eventually, but if you can eventually get a decent budget for a good sub going, you'll obviously end up with a better system in the end than going with the cheap HTIB options.

ngeh. I missed the sale at fry's for the $99 onkyo. I did find a HK AVR 135 for $150. would that be better or worse than the onkyo?

Go in and ask if they'll give it to you at the last sale price.

I would say it's probably better.

Ended up getting an HK AVR 235 for $185 instead. what a great deal. I'll take pics when it's set up. It has a SPL meter in the remote, neato.

Next purchase will be a entry level subwoofer, what do you guys recommend? I keep hearing good things about Dayton and Velodyne(well, as far as getting good deals are concerned). I also saw an infinity PS-8 for $99 on clearance @ CC ysterday.

Why do I get the feeling I'm going to want to upgrade in a short while?

You'll probably want to get a better SPL meter and calibration disc eventually. The setup for my old HK-325 via remote settings was pretty crappy.

The old Daytons were better than the new ones, but I think it's still a decent choice.

How big is your room?

You guys and your big rooms ;)

I agree that an upgrade will be in your future if you like to watch movies loudly and your initial sub budget is ~$100

Well, my sub budget will go up if I can get a deal on the sub. I just see a lot of deals at the deal sites on $100ish subs like the 10" dayton for $100-$125 or 12" dayton for $150. I also notice fry's has a dela on a velodyne VX10 sub every once in a while for $150. so those are my initial routes. Will the Velodyne outmatch the newer, inferior daytons?

Not sure on that.

AVSforum would probably have updated info on how the new daytons compare to the other usual suspects for the pricerange.

You are terrible! And so correct! The only good thing I've seen come from Bose in 30 years is advertising.

I'd buy JBL, Klipsh, Phillips or something like that, but I haven't shopped for speakers in a long time.

I'm pushing 160 watts per channel with .03% Toal Harmonic Distortion into Two 15 inch Phillips woofers and two pairs of tweeters and midranges. Kenwood 9600 Receiver and Scott Pro 100 Speakers.

I have the R30s and the R15s, and they sound great for the price. I also picked up the PSW12, which IMHO is a pretty good budget sub.

The R50s and the PSW10 would probably be a good combination. Just like mine, 'cept the better speakers and smaller sub.

Helps people even out room response and of course, more output

Welp, I just saw that deal on the insignias at Best buy, I figured it's a cheap price for a center channel.

Now I'm just waiting for my reciever to come in, and I should be set. I'm going to wait for a deal on the Velodyne at fry's
