Which area to live in NYC?

Can afford upto $1500 for a 1-bedroom or studio. Maybe $2000 depending on my salary. It would be better if it is closer to downtown area. So any recommendations? I've never been to NYC so I'm clueless. I'm sure I won't find an apartment that cheap around 5th Ave., right? I guess I just want to be as close as possible to Manhattan? So, help me 🙂 Parking is not an issue as I'll be selling my car.

 
If you are working in the Financial District, Battery Park City is pretty cheap now (after 9/11 and all). It's not very happening though and sort of isolated. I would recommend Chelsea, SOHO, Lower East Side, Nolita, or Gramercy. Each neighborhood has its own flavor so you should really walk around and check. $1500 will get you a studio (not much more).
 
Thanks for the info. So the upper west side is close to which area? I have no idea, that's why I'm asking 😀 I'm used to the European City Living where I can go down the stairs, exit to the sidewalk and see thousands of people walking around. Would like to see something similar in NYC. Possible @ which areas?

depends on what kind of hood you like.

east village isnt for everyone, but it's always busy, tons of food/bars.
the financial district is kinda dead. not too much goin on there and i've heard its gets annoying to do something simple like grocery shopping.

Those neighborhoods are not isolated, I was talking about Battery Park City. The ones I mentioned are "neighborhoody." By that I mean you walk out and there is a lot of people, but not like tourists and business people. Where you live is depends on you personality:

Bar Scene: Upper East Side
Got money: Upper West Side
You have lots of tattoos: Lower East Side
Gay: Chelsea/West Village
Artsy: SOHO/Nolita/Tribeca
Med Student: Murray Hill 🙂

I second this - there's a path train that goes right to the WTC site which is right downtown.
But if it's Manhattan you want (accept no substitutes) then I would say Lower East Side (Houston - 14th Sts. 3rd Ave. - Ave. C) or you might get lucky in the West Village (don't know how to describe the streets for the West Village).
 
Is it essential that you live in Manhattan, proper?

Your $1,500/mo will go a little farther out in Brooklyn or Queens. Your commute will be longer though.

Must be awesome to live at Battery Park City. The view is amazing. But I don't think I would be comfortable living in the city.

1500 for a studio sounds rite for the east village/union square area...THATS the neighborhood you want to live in =)
 
i heard the lower east side is the new up and coming hip neighborhood. lots of young people...and relatively cheap places to live
