i've seen several conflicting views of what's good and what's not good and what's close to real world and what's completely synthetic

so i ask which benches are best for:

speed
stability
temp

What kind of benchmarks are you talking about? Like for your CPU, harddrive, or video card?

Sisoft Sandra, 3dmark2000 and 3dmark2001 are but a few... If you do some searches on hardware reviews, you can see what most testers use to benchmark the different types of hardware, and select from those.

If you want benchmarks to see how fast your computer actually goes, try Sisoft Sandra and 3dmarks.... You can use 3dmark for stability as well, but if you want to test just your CPU and sill be able to use your computer at the same time, try one of those distributed computing things (keeps 100% cpu usage) Go to the distributed computing forum and ask about Seti@Home, RC5, Gamma, etc.
