and among usual mp3 files there are:
*.PAR *.P01 *.P02 ...
I don't seem to need them, but I am curious.

Say you download something that consists of 45 rar files. If one or two of those file are missing or broken then all you do is have the parity program (Like Quickpar or Smartpar) look at the .par or .pxx (where xx is a number) and it will automatically fill in the holes. That way a 400 meg download wont go to waste due to a few broken files.
