Which app does .PAR extention?

I d/l audio book (shell not tell which one, to keep all us happy :)
and among usual mp3 files there are:
*.PAR *.P01 *.P02 ...
I don't seem to need them, but I am curious.

They are files which are used to repair broken .rar files. You need 1 par file for each broken .rar file :)

They do what confused said..

Say you download something that consists of 45 rar files. If one or two of those file are missing or broken then all you do is have the parity program (Like Quickpar or Smartpar) look at the .par or .pxx (where xx is a number) and it will automatically fill in the holes. That way a 400 meg download wont go to waste due to a few broken files.
