Just whatever comes with Windows (or MSE). Works just fine for me. Now if you are a pirate (playing downloaded torrents) then yes, by all means install Fort Knox in your computer.

I use the included windows stuff. I haven't had an actual virus in forever. My wife though...oh lord...she always has some kind of nasty infection going on.

Bitdefender Total Security 2016(I've paid for two years multi user version). Malwarebytes free version, but it has never found anything so Bitdefender is a doing a great job on Win10, don't notice it's there.

I use eset nod32 smart security. I recently thought that i had an issue with it, but nod32 turned out to be innocent.
For the gamers, it has a gamer modus. Which will probably turn off some features in order to improve the gaming experience. I never used it.
Never noticed an issue during the sparse times that a game.

Windows Defender ... as a Win10 user, that's all you need to be reasonably safe against most things.

Anything else is just bloatware to help keep you safe from bad porn sites.

ESET NOD32. Been using it for years and it works well. We use it on all of our work servers and workstations and its been flawless. In 5 years only one user managed to get a virus through and onto her system and ESET WAS warning her relentlessly but the bitch just kept hitting yes dozens of times and ESET said fu bitch and BAM!

Norton (free with Comcast, but when I leave Comcast I'll buy it again) and Malwarebytes Pro. Bitdefender and Malwarebytes Pro is also a good combination.

Yea I don't use much I go old school if I suspect something and download the stand alone Kaspersky antivirus removal tool and run a malware scanner.

Some antivirus solutions are worse than a virus.

and most don't block any real threats remember the windows xp system admin shutdown virus everyone got that.

Some computer I fix that have nasty infections there scanners have missed it or have been hijacked so yea common sense is the best defence.

As for the warez, games, torrents you would be surprised how many of those detections are false positives.

I never keep anti-virus software running. I keep Windows Defender disabled in Windows 10. I'll enable it every few weeks to a month and perform a single scan. I'm always coming up empty.

My main PCs haven't had a virus in, I'd say, 7+ years. Not pirating crap, opening random emails, or going to dark corners of the Internet helps immensely.

I'd say one of the best protections is ad block software. The only times I got virus's that I'm aware of, have been through ads.

MSE is pretty awful. Any independent testing shows that.

I use Avira.

Nope. Computer Shopper Feb 2016:

Click twice.

It really is common sense even if you visit Xvideos and Youporn 4 times a day apiece. :sneaky:

Use AdBlock/Ghostery and common sense.

Of the nine security suites on test here, it was sixth best

Wow. Sixth best. Out of 9. What a stellar achievement. What color trophy would that be?:D
Glad to see its improved, but its clearly a tier or two below still.

Yeah MSE is better than what most people think, and if you use safe browsing habits, then you shouldn't have a problem.

But it's much more vulnerable to zero days attacks, compared to the higher echelon of AV software like Norton, Bitdefender etcetera..

For those that rely on not visiting dangerous sites, you're forgetting a huge risk, zero-day vulnerabilities. You can get infected in passing and not even realize.

BitDefender seems to be the best rated of free ones.

None. You don't need one. Its called common sense. MSE is fine, your fingers do the rest.

This. I've gotten exactly two viruses over the past 20+ years and I knew I was going to get them before I even clicked.

Even relatively innocuous sites have tried to slip something malicious in via a poor association with a particular ad company and thus a banner placed on their site. I feel sorry for the state of someone's computer that refers to most of the AVs as "bloatware". Even during a scan, Kaspersky only uses 1% of my CPU and takes only 140MB of memory. When not scanning it doesn't even register on CPU use and uses only 28.5MB. On a modern machine, this is an issue for some?

I'm a network security major, and I've learned several times over from sources more reliable than anecdotal forum warriors that MSE is taking security in your own hands. It's not that effective of a solution.

I've tried numerous antivirus applications in the past and they all either a) not work or b) work great for a few months then slow down the machine to prompt you to buy the upgraded version. Bit defender definitely did this.
I also despise how the treat you like a sucker. Renewal offers start off very expensive the 2 weeks later its on sale for $30 off the 2 weeks after that its on sale again for 75% off limited time offer act now! Then the day after it expires you can buy it at the special $10 price, then a month later you'll get a we miss you email $20 two years for 3 devices.
I know the corporate versions work better but once you install them its close to impossible to uninstall them.
In summary AV Companies suck.
