I currently use Norton AV 2000 for Win95/98. Of course, NAV 2000 won't work on Win2K/WinXP Pro. I am looking at NAV 2002, but it costs $25-$40, and from what I've read, it's full of bugs! What AV software do you all recommend for Win2K/XP? Anything free that does as good a job?

If you're looking for an antivirus tool that will sit in your system tray and constantly scan, then you're just not gonna find one that's free.

NAV is definitely the best A/V out there...better than mcafee viruscan

It DOES suck that you need 2002 to work with XP, but it's worth paying

There are a few freeware virus SCANNERS out there, that will scan when you tell them to, but they just don't beat having constant monitoring

Do you have any colleges nearby? If so, check out their student bookstores...and you can probably buy NAV at student discount prices :)

According to many PC magazines that have done research on this subject, they found out that the most powerful software was AVP from Kaspersky lab. They usually win by a big margin when it comes to virus definition data base. I remember a year or so ago, maybe more, when the CIH virus was acting, they were the only ones for a long period of time to be able to detect it and cure the PC.

I was using Norton before, then switched to AVP, and was using it for 1 year (the license expired :( ). My experience is just great with this, it is absolutely user-friendly and does not end up everywhere like MacAfee does and You can not get rid of it afterwards. This anti-virus program is great with a daily ! virus list update.

You can get it here:
AVP link

Give it a try, it is better than NA in my opinion, and not only in my...

some advice on norton av 2002 for xp. i have it installed and like many others i am "UNABLE" to scan without getting a script error. nortons response, "uninstall, then reinstall...then try scan again", same thing happens after reinstall. as of right now norton has not offered a fix for this! please note that this is not happening to everyone, but i just wanted to let you know. :)

anyways, if norton does not fix this problem right away i will no longer suppport their crappy support or services.

good luck

Norton Anti-Virus 2001 works fine in Windows2000. You can get Norton Systemworks 2001 for less than $20 now. As for WinXP, I have no idea. Sorry! :p
