You're all wrong, its LAS VEGAS!!!

I'm sure if you put pics of LV, Reno, and Atlantic City side by side, most people wouldn't be able to tell LV apart from the others 😛

NY has the most unmistakable landmarks IMO

in comparison to the square milage of LA - NYC is still more noticable... theres too many old landmarks there - brooklyn bridge, statue of liberty, empire state building, twin towers construction site, chrysler building, holland tunnel, coney island, the list goes on and on and on

What's in LA that makes it easily recognizable?

50ft high letters on the side of a mountain that say, "HOLLYWOOD."

The orignal question is a bit vague. Are we going for cities that physically (skyline wise) are most recognizable, or are we talking about landmarks? And are we asking these Q's to Americans only or everyone in the world? I would say LA and NYC have the first two spots (in which order is up for debate). From my experiences over seas Chicago aslo seems to be well known.

That's it? I think the Statue of Liberty is much more easily recognizable world wide than that sign.

I would say it's a toss up.

having been to all the cities in question, here are my rankings...

1. NYC -- more impressive and unique skyline than any other US city, due to the necessity of constantly building up rather than out.
2. DC -- due to the hight restrictions on building in the city, the Washignton Monument, White House, and the Hill all stand out.
3. San Fran -- even outside of the Golden Gate Bridge, the city is distinguished for its massive hills.
4. Vegas -- a little similar to Reno, maybe, but no one would ever mistake Vegas for AC.
5. Los Angeles -- unique for its urban sprawl and the Hollywood sign.
6. Chicago -- eh. I've only been there once, but other than the big lake sitting right next to it, I couldn't tell the difference between Chicago, Philly, or Ontario. Infamous for being a lay-over stop on your way to better places (see above list).

DC is over rated ...

i live 5 mins from DC, and the night life there is so overrated and boring now ... and i'm only 22

doesn't the "city of hollywood" claim to own the sign anways?

DC, then New York.

Surprised St. Louis isn't getting mentioned more - the Arch is up there with the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument for being a distinctive landmark.

2nd SF... or maybe seattle.

I can't picture LA or Las Vegas in my head.

I hate to say it, but the only reason I can picture the LA skyline in my head is from all the years of watching Angel 😛
