I currently have a AGP based Radeon 9600 256mb. Also an Athlon XP 2800, 2 sticks 512mb (1 gb total) pc3200 ram

I'd like to buy a better video card (not enough money for a complete upgrade) but I don't know if my cpu can handle any better.

Would a Radeon X1650 256mb AGP http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102085 - or Geforce 6800XT 256mb AGP http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814136008 work better with my system to play Oblivion? Or would this make no noticeable difference?

One of my PCs has an XP-M 2600 running at XP 3000 speed, with an ATI X800 XT-PE, and it keeps up very well. I got the card through an eBay seller, new, about a year ago, for right at $100 with shipping, and have not regretted the purchase. I play NWN2 and Oblivion with that one, quite easily. I would not be as charitable toward the mid-level ATI video, other than the "XT" (and it is smart to look at the specs of any Geforce using the "XT" name suffix, because almost all are just renamed "LE" crippled types of parts. The 6800XT has about the same performance as a 6600 GT, at a higher price.

Don't confuse the X1650 Pro, which is relatively slow, with the X1650 XT, which is quite good (better on the games I like than the 7600 GT).

Arkaign is right on X1950 Pro card..It will give you a good long term investment if you don't plan to upgrade your CPU.

X1950GT would probably be a decent match, lower power requirements than the X1950Pro and cheaper.

Using a X1950 PRO on a AXP is pretty much overkill...a 7800GS is a reasonable match to a AXP as well.

So far, I've not seen AGP versions of the GT, just the Pro. Meanwhile, don't sell the Barton series of XPs short, they were very very good when new, and still hold their own pretty well in many high demand situations.
