Which 80GB Harddrive would U recommend?

I got an ADSL connection a couple of months ago, and I very quickly filled my IBM Deskstar 30GB disk with lots of stuff. Even though I've burnt a lot of it on CD I'm still running low on diskspace, so I'm thinking about getting a new and bigger IDE disk.

My first thought was IBM's 80GB or 120GB Deskstars, since I've had 2 deskstar drives in the past and both have worked perfectly. They're also very cheap. However, I have also heard from many ppl that IBM's harddrives are not reliable nowadays.

So I don't really know what do believe or do.

Does anyone have some advice on the matter?

Sincerely,

Magnus

hi MementoMori,

I have just purchased an 80Gb Seagate barracuda IV (7200rpm) hard drive. I have had it 2 weeks and just installed winXP on it. Previous hard drive i have purchased have been IBM (40Gb GXP60 and also an 18Gb GXP22). I choose a seagate over an IBM this time purely on price as ibm hard drives seem to be much more expensive here in Australia. I have always found IMB hard drives to be very reliable.

From what i have heard the WD with 8mb cache are meant to be the fastest ide hard drive out there (or at least the were not long ago) whether you can tell a difference in speed other than in benchmarks is quesationable. I have never had much luck with WD.

Basically from this forum everyone will recommend something different anyway, so it comes down to personal choice.

If you're just getting a hard drive for holding files that you've downloaded, just get a large 5400 rpm drive. There's no need for blinding transfer speed if you're going to just have it as your download directory. (I have a WD 1200JB, granted it's a nice for an IDE drive... but not necessary for just mass storage)

The WD drive is fast, but I still prefer scsi ;)

Id be curious to hear some testimonials from people with IBM 120GXP hard drives. This is really cheap up here, 95us for the 80gb plus tax and Id like to pick one up but had two bad 75GXP's in a row a couple years back.

I remember reading that IBM recommended you didn't use the 120GXP's for more than 12 hours at a time or something. Along with the fact that IBM is pulling out of the HD business I wouldn't recommend them anymore. Its kind of a shame, my 60 GB 75GXP hasn't failed me and I've had it more than a year and half

this is a no brainer... of course the WD800JB. That 8mb cache is far better than getting some useless ata133 drive. And with IBM exiting the hard drive market, the 120gxp models are probly the last. Access times for ibm drives are slightly better though. But the 8mb cache still more than makes up for it.

alright... I guess I will stay away from IBM from now on :)

I've come down to two alternatives:

Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB IDE 7200RPM

or

Western Digital Caviar 80GB/IDE100

I'm not looking for a speedy thing, so the extra 6MB of cache on the Special Edition Caviar disk is not really something I need. So I don't think I'm gonna spend the extra bucks for that. I already have an IMB deskstar 30GB as my system-drive.

I'd go with the WD. I own one and it's great. Not too noisey either as far as I can hear any way.

IBM is selling/amalgamating with Hitachi's hard drive division and retaining 30% ownership of the new company although their name wont be on them anymore. I thought I read they were retaining the scsi part of their hard drive mfg but not sure and cant find that info.

There certainly seems to be a "fire sale" on IBM ide hard drives right now.

I would suggest that any of the major makers' 80gig 5400rpm drives would suit your purposes just fine. While there were some major problems with the 75gxp, and to a lesser extent 60gxp IBM drives, the 120gxp's seem to be OK. Even if big blue is selling off that part of the biz, it's not like they're going broke- your warranty will still be good.

Just take the best deal you can find.....

I had two 80 gig 7200 ATA100 Western Digital drives go bad during a nitemare raid Xp pro install. They just both quit working. Customer service was outstanding and quickly sent me 2 new drives. The customer service was painless. All I had to due was inter the serial number and they instantly verified I had more than 2 years of warranty left. Very happy now. (not using raid) lol. I give the company extra marks on customer service on MY satisfaction!! No problems the last 3 months. I know there are better drives out there but just wanted to share my experience.

I haven't had problems with IBM drives even 75GXP and considering the prices that the 120GXP drives are going for (at newegg et al.), I wouldn't hesitate to continue to buy IBM and smile all the way to the bank.

If all that you care about then that western digital drive is your best option. HOWEVER, Maxtor hard drives now use fluid bearing for more reliable operation and most important more quiet operatioin. Seagate uses a similar bearing but they're bad in RAID arrays. Maxtor is the only hard drive manufacturer that will send you a replacement drive BEFORE you send the defenctive one back. If it's only an imminent failure, this will allow you to copy your data. Very good warranty.

I'd avoid IBM at all costs (I've went through 3 of their drives. the warranty is good if it does go bad, but sending it in that often is just annoying to say the least). I've got a Samsung 80gb 7200rpm just recently to go with my 60gb IBM 60GXP though. The Samsung so far has been a very nice drive. No problems out of it and it's very, very quiet.
