I have 4 options, all of them within $10 of each other.

Asus Direct CUII
Sapphire OC
MSI Twin Frozr III
Gigabyte OC

Which one will run the coolest, stock and OC?

ASUS is the easiest "normal" 7850 to OC no matter what your cooling is going to be, as it has the highest bios max voltage limit. It also has a pretty strong stock cooler. I've managed to do quite well with the stock cooler without being loud.

Mine seems to be a little on the above average side, but I'm able to keep it at 1260 MHz with only 35% fan speed, which is audible, but not loud.

Temps at the ear bleeding loud 100% are about 10C lower than 35% (~2150 RPM).

So at 1260 Mhz 35% you are what, 50? then at 100% you are at 40degrees?

Honestly i'm not sure what temps would be at specific fan speeds. What i do know is that the stock cooler isn't loud.

From the 7870 review but the 7850 shares the same exact fan

Yeah, go with the ASUS DCII model. It has a great cooler, is quiet, and has the most overclocking-friendly options.

ASUS without doubt is the best.

In terms of OC'ing it's luck of the draw.

You can't really say buy sapphire or buy ASUS to get good oc's.
Trust me i know :).

The asus DC2 is a beast on the 7850 - altho i'll say the sapphire dual fan version is also quite quite epic from my personal tests.

And both work in a 90 degree silverstone case!

MSI cooler works very well. My load temps running Folding@Home overnight stay in the mid 50s C. Furmark generates more heat, but don't remember any numbers off the top of my head.

I just wish Asus didn't look so ugly with that way oversized cooler, even the 7870 is a bit unsightly, though much better than 7850. I know it's only aesthetic, and I like Asus as a company (both my current MB and GPU are Asus), but it bothers me... :)

Yes, the cooler overhangs the pcb by like 2.5 inches. Asus 7950 DCUII looks great, but this is like an XXL shirt on a 7-year old kid - it may be a nice shirt and a good looking kid, but he'd still be laughed at in school.

Who cares if it overhangs. All that matters is how it cools. You cant see the overhang in your case anyway

How is the noise level on the asus 7850?

Hmm, just found this review: http://tbreak.com/tech/2012/04/asus-hd-7850-direct-cuii-review/

"Fans tend to get slightly loud when card is under full load"

"For the most part eh fans remained fairly quiet, but running Metro 2033, Battlefield 3, Unigine and 3DMark made the fans loud. Not loud enough to be annoying, but on our open testbed then were audible in the whole room. Inside a rig, of course, even that much sound will be minimal."

I care. And I did say it's only aesthetic. If it's all the same to you or you don't find it ugly, great. :)
And I can see the overhang in my case since there's glass on the side, not that I spend much time looking through it.
