Which 6600GT AGP Model to Get?

Bouncing around now and decided to get my video card first.

I have a 9600XT now and have been planning on upgrading both my video card and monitor. Had lots of trouble deciding which to do first. Get the new LCD Monitor and wait about a month on video card or vice versa.

I am leaning towards the video card.

My question is, which 6600GT should one get? Right now the Chaintech looks the nicest for one reason. A very nice bundle (Well very nice I say, but honestly its the only one that has a game that I hear is popular and I have not played, Painkiller). Honestly I dont know of hardly any other difference between the cards. Is there a difference? Has anyone heard of specific problems with specific name brands or models?

Would be a big help if anyone could post their findings and thoughts.

Also one more question to pop in at the end. I cant find any info at all comparing a 6800le to a 6600GT. I am guessing they are very similar. In fact I cant understand the reasoning other than 6800 sounds better in a OEM machine than 6600. If the 6800le is faster, is it $40 faster?

Thanks up front for any advice.

Also if Chaintech is the suggested one, anyone know of a good place near middle eastern united states that ships fast and might have it in stock? Newegg does not appear to, and thats the only company I usually order from.

Make sure the model you buy has 1Ghz memory, reference design for the AGP 6600GTs is 900Mhz. I know XFX and BFG both have 1Ghz(+) memory.

Hmm nice point Bateluer.

Thanks for that headsup and that is something I will be doing research on. Anyone else got any other things I should watch out for or check on?

Thanks again for any advice.

Just be wary of fan noise, especially if it's going into a SFF system that'll be sitting on your desk. Read Anandtech's 6600GT roundup for details on noise.

I went with the BFG due to all of the benefits of an american based company. 24/7 tech support and lifetime warenty with local support. I keep getting told to go get the BFG 6800OC instead, I found it for around the same price as I payed for the 6600 GTOC from BFG, but every single place I go has it out of stock. even the Verto from Compusa is totally and completely out of stock. I also hear however that the 6800OC's GPU is a NV40 and so more broken than the 6600's NV43. The only decently priced 6800 I've found is the XFX from newegg, and I had really wanted tos tick with BFG.

MSI's model includes VIVO and 1000MHz memory, setting it apart from all of the others. If you don't care about that feature, then I'd say BFG as well (once people stop price gouging) because of the aforementioned reasons.

i have a request of anyone who buys a bfg 6600gt oc and feels like removing the cooler for a few seconds... 🙂

please post what kind of memory it uses. as far as i know, most manufacturers are using 2.0ns chips, but a few manufacturers (gainward, and evga's pci-e 6600gt pro) are using 1.6ns chips on 6600gt's. i was wondering if bfg is using the faster chips or if they're simply pushing the ram past where it would normally be. the card looks practically identical to galaxy's agp 6600gt, which has the same clock settings as the bfg card. i've read claims that the galaxy card uses 1.6ns chips.

i wrote an email to bfg asking about this, and got a prompt reply stating that they're "not ready to reveal this information to the public at this time." i should have wrote back that i'm not ready to buy one of their products at this time, but if they have actually put decent chips on the card (and i can't find a reasonably priced 6800nu in the next few weeks), i'll probably order one.

Hmm according to the review here MSI cards are getting some serious artifacts. Right now not looking like that will be my main choice. OH and this is going to be the AGP model. Not sure if I posted that nfo earlier but am adding it to my XPC system and when I purchased it a few months ago there was no option for PCI-e on any AMD based SFF.

But thanks again for the advice.

That sux. I'm glad I ended up buying the eVGA model instead. I was originally going to get the BFG, but I got tired of resellers hiking up the price like here and here.

My GAINWARD 6600GT uses 2.ns memory, it is the ultra 6800 GS that use the 1.6ns memory, however my card clocks 100% rock solid @ 580/1200

this gainward card is the one i was talking about, the 6600gt golden sample "GLH". 540 core, 1150 memory. too bad gainward cards are getting really hard to find in north america. but hell, with the price i'd probably have to pay to get one, i'd be better off just buying a 6800.

mdahc, what's the default memory clock speed on the evga card, if you don't mind me asking? i've seen it listed as 900 and 1000 at various sites, and evga.com doesn't have a dedicated product specs page for it yet.

* edit - i found the product page and the spec sheet. 2.0ns chips @ 450(900).

Where did you get your Gainward AGP 6600 GT?

What resolution do you plan to run an LCD at? 'cause I was considering a 6600 until I saw how poorly it did at 1280 with AA/AF enabled and decided it was not worth it from a 9700. On the other hand, a 6800 might be but they have defective hardware at the mo' (the notorious PVP). If I were ye, I would lean more towards the LCD first since the pricing of the viddy cards is likely to drop more quickly as availability of the 6600 increases and ATI's new offerings generally force lower pricing across the range.

My XFX has 2ns RAM, Runs fine at 1.1GHz. Haven't tried further. Core autodetects at 570MHz (default 500).

Great card. Has dual DVI as well. About $230 at tiger direct.

looks like the MSI is crappy, I got the XFX I getting good fps in Doom3 but the temp of the chip goes high with AA

I have the FXF card.

I just played about 4 hours of HL2, and not a single problem.

It's clocked from the factory at 500/1000.

No artifacts, no overheating......just lots of game play.
