I would stay away from RCA and Sanyo (bad luck with their tube TV's). So between Philips (now Funia?) and Vizio, I'd go with the Vizio.

Why not Plasma? The 42" Vizio plasma is about the same price as the LCD, maybe a little less. I have a 42" Vizio plasma and have seen both the 32 and 37 Vizio LCD's. All produce excellent HD picture.

edit: I've even seen the Panasonic 42" Plasma for under $600.

There's a 42" 1080p Dynex LCD at Best Buy for that $650. There's a huge thread in the AVS forums about it, the DX-LCD42HD-09 model. Tons of people are extremely impressed by it.

My friend just picked one up, and after you calibrate it, it really does look fantastic. Thankfully, there are near perfect calibration settings in the same AVS thread. :)

any reasons your tv choices are from walmart only? might want to avoid Philips.

Funai to distribute Philips TVs in U.S., Canada. The bottom line is that Philips pulled out of the North American market last September but allowed Funai (a lower tier Japanese electronics manufacturer) to use their brand identity in exchange for a royalty. If you live in the US and buy a Philips TV you are really buying a Funai TV.

Out of the choices, Phillips in a dramatic first place (though this is the last year I would say that after the Funai thing mentioned above). Vizio 2nd
