Which 24" LCD should I get?

I am in the process of building a new pc. I am having a hard time choosing between these two monitors:

1. SCEPTRE X24WG-1080P Black 24" 2ms DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor

The Sceptre seems to have better specs, but the Samsung has a better reputation (I think). I have seen the Samsung in person, and it is beautiful, but the Spectre is less $$ and I have not seen it in person.

I will being using a 8800Ultra and using it for gaming mostly.

If anyone knows of another better LCD in this price range please let me know. Please help!

Get the new Dell E248WFP. I got mine a month ago and very happy with it. Great design and great price. (I got a discount from my company).

i read the lcd thread, i concluded that dell & samsung were the brands to go with. Considering you have all high quality components, i would choose one of these manufactures being in your shoes. Myself, i go with cheapo, see sig.

I have tried a sceptre extreme gaming monitor a few monthes ago, it was the worst monitor I have ever seen.
1. It recommended use of VGA over DVI... thats because it had a messed up DVI implementation causing black bars and incorrect aspect ratio
2. It made a high pitched sound
3. It had an automatic brightness adjustment, that didnt work right. Causing the monitor to go from very bright to very dim with a lound snap sound.
4. It had problems recognizing button presses.
5. It had a crappy OSD.
6. I forgot, but there were a few other very serious problems...


Anyways, samsung is arguably the best LCD maker (aside from NEC maybe) and dell makes more economical versions of samsung panels so you should strongly consider them as well.

I was looking at monitors recently and that samsung was one of the models I was considering. I ended up getting the lg flatron 24" at bb for $499 which is over $100 less than the egg and couldn't be happier. I would make sure that you can do a side by side comparison of anything you might consider buying before you commit.

if you have an officemax nearby the office max one (other than not having the greatest bezel) is probably better than both of those.


those are both TN panels. the samsung also isnt particularly cheap.... i woudl recommend that if you are going to spend $400+ on a monitor you might as well spend $500 on the LG 24" with HDMI and a pmva screen or the benq 241 model with hdmi and dvi and the same type of panel. the office max is a pvma screen so its got better viewing angles and colors as well and costs less than the samsung (though its not super stylish and lacks hdcp...)

Correct me if I am wrong, But I was under the impression TN panels were best for gaming, and as long as you do not care about viewing angle (as I do not) they should be ok...I have seen more expensive 24" LCDS that were a different panel technology but got horrible reviews for gaming, for example the Dell Ultrasharp series.

If the only concern you have is gaming at really fast response times (which I really think is completely unnecessary: I have been playing everything on my 25ms GTG Samsung PVA panel for the past two years, and I have not noticed enough ghosting for me to care), then any 24" TN panel is fine, and will save you a few hundred dollars.

You're essentially looking at $300-$400 for a TN, $500-$600 for VA and $1000+ for IPS for the 24" domain. I would honestly recommend an MVA or S-PVA panel for a good mix.

If you want to seriously considering getting a PVA/MVA panel and have a few hundred more bucks, the BenQ FP241W also gets my recommendation. It's around ~$580 + ship on NCIXUS. I really tend to prefer Samsung panels over AUO/LGPhillips panels (IDK, personal preference), but the recent S-PVA 245T seems to be a rather disappointing from recent reviews, so I won't say anything about it.

well if you have never owned a 24" before, the TN viewing angle issues, seem to be the worst on it because its so big.

that said, i dont think its going to be horrible to game on a pmva.. then again some people are super super super sensitive to refresh rate, but i would say most people are not.

hey i read your quote on the lcds and was also looking to buy a lcd. do you recommend the BenQ FP241W over the dell/samsung..my friend told me benq is the best..compared to dell/samsung..what do you recommend...and why?

Well, as far as I know, the Dell FPW2407-HC and the Samsung 245T both use the same (or similar) Samsung S-PVA panel, and there have been some issues reported with "excessive" ghosting and blacklight bleeding by some users, not all. So the reviews of both monitors have been pretty polar. The only thing the Dell seems to lack over the Samsung is connectivity options (no HDMI).

I know the BenQ is what I would probably get right now, considering its almost $100 cheaper than the unrebated Samsung.

My Soyo 24" monitor ($299 at OfficeMax) is great for gaming. Much better than my old display, which was an Acer 22" TN display. Once calibrated, the colors are very nice. Great monitor for the price.

There is certainly no reason to get the Sceptre, since the Soyo is better, and you can return it to OfficeMax if you don't like it., and still buy the Samsung at Costco.
