Which 2.5" HD: IBM Travelstar vs Toshiba?

I want to get a 40GB 2.5" HD for my new Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. I can't decide between the IBM Travelstar and the Toshiba 40GB. I know the IBM Deskstars are very unreliable but I'm not sure about the Travelstars? I don't trust them but the Travelstar is $50 cheaper than the Toshiba. Which should I get?

I've been happy with the travelstar drives and wouldn't hesitate to get one

hsa long hsa you keep backups and since there is a 3 year waranty i think you should be ok.

I changed out my Inspiron 8100 HD for a 5400 TravelStart HD back in November and it's been rock solid ever since. No problems here. It's pretty quiet and quick for a laptop drive!

I used to like TravelStar's, but I've heard a lot of iffy reports about the reliability of the latest generation of the series. They are faster then the Toshiba model, but it seems they've begun to inheret some of the issues that have seemingly become prevalent in IBM's desktop line of drives.

Until IBM has solidly and conclusively improved long term reliability across their entire range of drives I prefer to pass on them.

Hence, my choice for Toshiba my defauls as it's the only other listed option.

Read the Delltalk Inspiron HDD forums. There's tons of posts over the last 2 years about IBM drives failing. It's been a precursor to the 75GXP/60GXP fiasco that's currently going on. I wouldn't touch an IBM 2.5" drive. I have 4 Toshiba HDDs for my Inspiron 7500 that all run great. Real reliable and real quiet.

I don't think having a 3 year warranty means a whole lot, because if your drive craps out you lose your data and/or time. Yeah, you can send it back and get a replacement but what about your data and time? Better to have a Toshiba drive with a 3 year warranty that you won't ever have to use.
