i need a 2.5" drive of 500GB or higher capacity that will be internal to a laptop, but not an OS drive ( there will be an SSD for that ).

i'm looking primarily for reliability of course. quiet would be nice. not that concerned about efficiency ( desktop replacement notebook ). not very concerned about speed either as this will be for long term storage of stuff like videos and pictures.

i buy computer parts only from Newegg and Amazon so if you posted a link that would help.

thanks.

I have a desktop replacement laptop, and I put two 256GB SSDs in mine (a Samsung 830 and a Crucial M4). I figured these would be more reliable than a spinning disk. For a regaulr hard drive, you should be fine with a decent 5400RPM drive with 16MB of cache, such as this one:

It will run cool and quiet.

yeah well i see no point in a storage SSD. i'm not sure if i buy the reliability premise ... is there the DATA to back up your reliability claim ?

I would get a 2.5" WD green or blue. Greens are more quiet and generate less heat, but won't be as fast as the blues.

I have two Seagate Momentus 7200.4s. One in my laptop and one in my desktop. (Going for the C&Q thing.)

I am very happy with them. If I put my ear to my laptop's HD, I can hear it, but not normally. My desktop's PSU fan is the loudest thing in that build, can't hear it over that. A 5400 rpm drive would be quieter, but I often enjoy the little extra performance.

I have not seen WD green 2.5,
WD blue runs at 5400rpm, so there is really no point in green.

My laptop data drive is a Seagate Momentus XT, 500GB.
It seems that the OP won't benefit much from the hybrid cache. I installed the earlier revision 500GB as the single drive in my sister's desktop replacement. She hasn't reported any problems, but I had some buyer's remorse after reading reviews and user feedback. According to them, the APM is a little aggressive, leading to extra spinning up/down, noise, and power consumption.

would it make sense to go with a lower capacity drive like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136280

because i can't find 500GB or higher drivers with equally good customer reviews ?

i only have 200 gigs of data to be stored immediately, but i wanted to leave more reserve capacity than just another 100 gigs. however if the smaller drive is more reliable i might simply get an external drive when i run out of space ?

That 320GB WD Black drive uses a single platter, which means it may run a bit cooler than a 2 or 3 platter model.
Also the density isn't packed as tight as 500GB per platter designs.
Which in my book spells a little better reliability.

As long as you can live with the lower capactiy... 320GB Scorpio Black = :)

OP is talking laptop, not desktop. I replaced a 320GB WD Scorpio black with a Momentus XT 320, and it cut boot/load time in half, and it runs cool and quiet. I have two Thinkpads, each now has a pair of Momentus XTs, all flashed with latest firmware. No problems at all in over a year of this config.

Do you have a particular reason for using XTs as data drives? The cache is only effective if the same few GBs is accessed repeatedly.
