For no more than $350.. Sharpness is very important (text) and also gaming is important. I want it to last long..

I dont know much about 17" monitors, but I can tell you that my Sony CPD-200ES 17" I bought a couple years ago is very very good and is easy on the eyes.

CRT? A 17" CRT will run you about $150 +/- $25 and a 19" will run you about $250 +/- $50. I personally use a 19" KDS XF-9b that I bought for $199 and I'm very happy with it, so happy that I bought the 17" KDS XF-7b for both my brother and my mother, and they're both very happy too.

The best thing you can do is search the web for monitor roundup reviews and pick out about five that are rated hightly, then go to a computer or office supply store with a good selection of monitors and look at them for yourself, since what might be sharp to others might not be sharp to you. Then check around to find where you can get the best deal on the one you like (usually newegg.com). But whatever happens, if you only want a 17" you'll probably spend quite a bit less than $200. If you want it to last long, make sure you get a 3 year warranty, and you might even think about buying from someplace like an office store where you can get an extended warranty for cheap (e.g., office depot).

If you want LCD, that's another story. Then you certainly will spend more than $350 on a good 17" LCD.
