We are trying to upgrade our network in our (fraternity) house to 100Base-T, and I think that a 24-port 10/100 switch is in order for the fourth floor. However, there are many switches out there; which one(s) should I consider? My only desired specifications are:
trouble-free
full-duplex (for a max of 200Mbps; almost all switches have this)
able to handle encrypted communciations (i.e., IPSec, which my 3Com 3CR990-TX-97 can process on the fly with appropriate connections; I am pretty sure that all switches can handle this, but not positive)

If you have the money, I'd go with Cisco. They tend to be the best quality in my opinion.

The Cisco 2924XL is a good switch and you may want to look at the Cisco 3524XL, it's a newer model...

While I would love to get these switches, I think that they are far out of my price range (2924XL = $1399, 3524XL = $1875). I am looking for a switch that is, ideally, under $600 (and I have seen several for $350).

Any low end switch should work fine for you. I dont have anything bigger then a 5 port but still I have used many brands and I would just find one for the best price you can find. Netgear makes a real nice 24 port for around $400 at buy.com and there is a $30.00 coupon for new customers. As you said there are many out there in the $350 - $400 range and most are going to do the job just fine.
