Which 1 TB HD out of these two for data storage?

Which out of these two should I buy for data storage/backup. They won't be used as system drive so data integrity and drive longevity is my main concern rather than speed. They are both priced +- $5 of each other. Both reasonably cheap.

1- Samsung HD103UJ, F1, 7200rpm, 32MB, 1TB, SATA-II
I have one of these already and am happy with it so far but not sure about it's track record.

2- Western Digital Caviar GP, 7200rpm, 16MB, 1TB, SATA-II (Green Power something)
I heard the green power things puts more strain on the moving parts.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd have said "go for the SpinPoint if you're looking for speed" but in your situation I'd probably get the GreenPower instead. The GreenPower Caviar drive is much more energy efficient and quiet but does this by slowing the spindle speed and sacrificing throughput. It doesn't "put more strain on the moving parts" and if anything would be more likely to survive longer by not being strained as hard as the fastest drives, but it's more oriented for the likes of a HTPC or somewhere where big, affordable, low-power storage is more important than access times and read/write speed.

What in the world are you talking about?

Sorry about that. Maybe you can get the Black later when you sell your Green.

Not to rain on your parade, but 1TB of data is a huge amount of data. Make sure you've got your important stuff backed up to another HD that is NOT in the same computer!

Without a doubt the Samsung SpinPoint F1. It stomps the WD drive performance wise.

well, i guess what should be asked is, is the drive a storage drive? or is it a main drive?

If its storage drive, i dont see jack of a difference from my black and green 1TB drives. I have 6, 4 being green 2 being black, and as i said, i dont notice any difference in transfer.

I can blame my network to that bottle neck :p

However if its your main drive, and your doing constant seeks, and such, i think you'll see a difference between the two.

As for me i run 6 raptors in raid0 on my main system, im an uber speed demon. :p
