Which is better? Why? I'm dieting and considering protein shakes. I'm slightly overweight and want to get lean and build muscle. However, right now I'm only able to do the Armstrong Pull up program due to my situation. I will soon be able to do full body workout and cardio but I don't want to wait on getting my waist in order.

I highly recommend casein for a general purpose protein shake. Whey is very thin and will not keep you satisfied for very long. Casein congeals in the stomach and is much more satisfiying. Whey is great for after a workout, but casein is much better most any other time of day - especially at night.

I'd take the casein idea and only use it before you go to bed. This will guarantee that you are getting an ample amount of protein all through the night as it will remain in the stomach longer. For the rest of the day, whey is the way.

Edit: you know I read your post again and realized that you aren't going to be doing some full body stuff just yet. Since you first mentioned that you want to lose some wait before you mentioned build some muscle its important to know that you should first be working on losing a certain amount of body fat and then eat to focus on gaining that muscle. Keep this in mind when you buy your protein. Protein shakes are good as long as your work out allows you to get to a point to actually need the protein.

The protein is sort of a meal supplement. Yesterday my meals went like this:
Shake for breakfast
Banana
Spinach, chicken breast, and carrots for lunch
Protein bar
Apple
Chicken breast, broccoli, and celery for dinner

I'm 6ft, 200lbs right now and want to get down to about 185. Once I am able to work out full body, I expect my weight to go up again. But until my current situation changes, all I can do are push ups, pull ups, sit ups, and jogging.

Uh... there is no fat in that diet. Where are your EFAs? Try eating some mixed nuts, add some beef to the diet, and if all else fails just buy an EFA supplement to add to your protein shakes.

Your body's ability to burn fat is greatly hampered when essential fats are restricted in the diet.

Gladly. How about 6 oz of beef for dinner.
