I get bad stomach pain and throat tightening from whey protein powders. I've tried quite a few. When I first used them I didn't have a problem, but once had to go to the hospital for severe abdominal pain after eating a vanilla-covered PowerBar. Around that time, I started having a reaction to the protein powders. I wonder if it's related to the Stevia that was used to sweeten the ones I used initially? Stevia has a questionable safety status.

The weird thing is that I don't have a reaction to regular milk products (except one lowfat Swiss cheese I tried that makes me feel slightly queasy).

I've tried one brand of powdered milk and egg protein, and vegetable protein and never had stomach trouble.

I also have a chocolate allergy.. :(

I would agree here, but if it IS the Stevia, they're not going to really confirm anything. Try something with a different sweetener such as Sucralose or some natural flavoring. I would honestly go to the doctor though since it may be something else that is giving you the allergic reaction.

My roommate is lactose intolerant, he gets bad gas/cramping from whey protein since it's a milk product (I guess?) he uses soy based protein powder.

If you're lactose intolerant, avoid whey concentrate. Whey isolate should be fine. I bought some Gemma (pea) protein from www.trueprotein.com and its actually, for me at least, pretty good. Not even a hint of pea flavor in my premium french vanilla. Haven't tried other flavors yet.

If you think it is the artificial sweetner, then get optimum nutrition All Natural Whey. Completely natural.

I'm allergic to dairy, which includes lactose, casein, and whey. For a substitute I use Soy protein powder. Give that a try, they should have it a local health food store or natural grocer like Whole Foods or Wild Oats. The brand I have is "Spiru-tein" from Nature's Plus. Whole Foods has their own brand that tastes the same.

This would be a good way to figure out if it's caused by whey or by the stevia.

So odd that you can drink milk and other milk products but not the whey... If the milk was boiled I could understand but other milk products are ok... Then again maybe it's your level of sensitivity. The protein powder might be overload of the 2 proteins you may be allergic to. You may not be allergic to the lactose but the whey proteins... alpha-lactalbumin and Beta-lactoglobulin?
Chocolate is probably not a chocolate allergy but dairy products in the chocolate, unless you are one of those rare individuals who react to straight cacao.

Talk to a allergist/immunologist before you end up in the hospital again or a serious anaphylactic response... I wouldn't try any whey products until then, not the whey isolates either. They may pull most of the lactate out but you may have an allergy to the protein itself.

A male with vaginitis? Have you experienced that?

I've tried whey isolate and unsweetened whey. Both cause the pain. The weird thing is that they didn't until after I went through at least two large cans. Since that time, several years ago, I can't have whey protein powder at all without getting the throat tightening/stomach pain.

I really doubt it's due to lactose/lactate because the Milk/Egg Protein I got didn't bother me, although it tasted terrible because of the company's added ingredients.

I'm not a fan of soy because there have been studies that suggest isoflavones have a negative affect on men's health. One study of Hawaiian men found that soy consumption is linked to more rapid aging, particularly of the brain.

As for chocolate, it is the cocoa that I'm allergic to. White chocolate doesn't bother me at all.

I suppose what I should look for is an organic egg protein powder. It should be organic because chicken feed is laced with arsenic to kill stomach parasites and I'm not a fan of getting arsenic in my diet. I don't trust sucralose, aspartame, or acesulfame-K so I'd prefer an unsweetened product, or one made with regular sugar.

I've developed acid reflux in the last two years, and maybe this is related somehow to the pain caused from the whey?
