I'm trying to plan a trip for Dec 20-23 to fly out of Atlanta, Nashville, or Birmingham... What slopes can I hit with the cheapest rates and best prices on lodging. I'm poor....help. ;)

Best spot in north america is blackcomb/whistler, they just got pounded with alot of snow. I would say vail but its to crowded for my likes.

when i went to whistler/blackcomb the snow was a lot heavier than in utah. the tree runs were great but that's about it. still it's the biggest area i've been to.

Go to Utah. I personally thought the snow was much more fun than (and it was less crowded) than Steamboat or Copperhead. I've gone to The Canyons, Powder Mountain, and Nordic Valley. Nordic Valley was the only one that I didn't like better than Steamboat.

Whistler! Never been but I heard it rocks.

I've skied in Quebec, near Quebec City. Mont-Ste-Anne. Awesome.

I've been to Utah the last 2 years...I'm just gonna get ripped off on airfare and lodging. I'm trying to see if anyone knows of a cheaper alternative...

Right now it looks like the airfare is gonna be $400-500 flying from Atlanta (which I have to drive 100 miles to get there).... Then I'm looking at another $400 for lodging and lift tickets...that doesn't count car rental or food...

Would colorado be cheaper? Anywhere else?

I think I'm going to go to Snowbird at the end of January. It's been great having my best friend living near Salt Lake City for the past couple of years. :)

if you ever ever visit CA, go to Mammoth Mtn. It never dips below 10 degs minimum over there. Usually it's around 20-30 deg F.

And the slopes and snow are great there.

Mammoth mtn here in CA is great but it isn't really close to anywhere so you either spend more to fly directly in to the little airport there or you fly into Los Angeles and drive 6 hours.

I would go with a Denver area resort, then, since there are always cheap airfare specials for Denver in Dec / Jan.

East:
Sugarloaf - Maine, Best Single Mountian Skiing in the Eastern USA
Lake Placid (white Face) close second to Sugarloaf
Tremblant in canada, Best Eastern Resort
Killington is nice but corwded and expensive
Jap Peak is great also

West:
blackcomb/whistler > *
Heavenly or anyplace on Lake taho lightest powder ever
Big Sky in Motana is huge and not crowded
Squaw Valley CA - great but kinda uppity like vail and aspen

i would not recomend going to any place liek Aspen or Vail, too crowded and too expensive, and you have to deal with a bunch of really fvcking annoying people who really dont care about skiing

On a budget, Utah is the place. The morons head to Colorado and California to fight giant crowds and pay giant prices. On a bang-for-the-buck basis nothing beats Utah. Even Canada isn't such a great value anymore since exchange rates are a lot less favorable than they were 5 years ago.

When work paid for my airfare and hotel, it wasn't too difficult to rent a car and pay for a lift ticket...I just hate absorbing the cost of flying out on short notice. :p I'll probably see what I can come up with for options and if things don't work out, I'll hit one of the more local slopes and maybe plan something for February. THanks to everyone who replied.

Whistler > all.

I was there the other day and it looks beautiful.

The drive up to Whistler is a bit of a pain right now though, the Sea to Sky highway is having work done on it in preparation for the 2010 olympics.

i've been to telluride x2, aspen, vail x2, breckenridge, arapahoe basin, copper moutain, and keystone.

of those, my favorite was telluride.

If you are going with someone i think whistler has a deal for $180 each for two people two nights and two days lift tickets.

hehe ya that's true. but i think the 6 hour drive is worth it. the local slopes here in So. Cal. isn't as great and pretty crowded. not that mammoth is not crowded, but it's a huge resort so it's pretty easy to find the lifts that aren't crowded.

And it's not too cold hehe.

Nashville to Reno is $374 for round trip airfare. Then about an hour drive to Tahoe. There are some relatively cheap hotels in Tahoe, and lots of slopes for you to choose from. I prefer Tahoe myself, the scenery and nightlife is worth the extra price.

Nashville to Denver is $351 round trip, and I'm sure you could find a cheap hotel there.

Since you asked...

Whistler/Blackcomb, of course. It's snowing today :) The highway work is done for the winter, so no delays there. I run a hotel for cheap accommodations.

See sig for link.
