Trying to book a flight to california for my dad and I have absolutely no idea where to start. Some people say that if I book at like 12 (or 2am?) or something that the fares will be significantly discounted, but I have no idea what thats even about lol.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks ATOT!

Typically you should book weeks and/or months in advance if possible. The closer you are to the actual flight date, the higher the cost of the ticket it will be usually.

Many times though, Southwest airlines have pretty decent flight prices to major cities. I'd check there first. www.southwest.com.

You could also try other major airlines websites like www.aa.com.

Other travel sites would be:

priceline.com
travelocity.com
hotwire.com
expedia.com
kayak.com

Most web sites cull from the same data base. Presented differently. But end result is close to same. Within $5-$10 when you actually get an honest comparison. Tues and Wed are best times for looking. Also there are three main price windows. 10, 7 and 3 days lead time.

Southwest flights are not exposed to the search engines.

Early AM and late PM are usually the cheapest.

Also look at alternate airports. The search engine will let you know of such.

Southwest and Expedia have an option to view a period of time to see what the best fares could be.

Most airlines will charge you a change fee if you have not paid a premium for the ticket. Southwest gives you full credit toward a future flight in next 12 months from purchase date.

Expedia is the last travel company I would ever book with. Had a very bad experience with them a few years back. Was going to visit my then girlfriend in DC. Booked a flight and hotel, which got cancelled due to a bad snow storm. Expedia offered me no help what so ever. Just took my money and ran. Didn't even want to honour the travel insurance I bought with them. Demanded I show them proof that it snowed. Yep, that storm was the Snowmageddon if 2009.

Ended up spending hours on the phone with Delta. Despite their reputation, at least they were helpful and ended up refunding me. It's best to just book through the airlines directly. I'm thoroughly convinced travel agents, especially online ones, are a scam.

Another story. Wanted to go to Halifax for vacation last year. Phoned a travel agent to book this package they had where you flew there, stayed for a few days, then took the train back. They wanted almost $2000! I booked all three separately and spent under $1000 for the entire trip. That was including flight, train, hotel, and rental car.

I agree with this. I will usually use a site like expedia or travelocity to get an idea of which airline has the flights that I want, and then go directly to that airline's website to make the reservations.

I also never make a reservation with an airline for a flight that is actually "operated" by a different airline.

I did have good experience with Orbitz.

If I was the OP, I would go to the websites of airlines that serve my local airport first, then go to the mentioned travel websites. Try to book with a stay over Saturday to get the best price.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If you're trying to book more than 3 months out, they just have generic prices for the flights. Pretty much every major airline does this, that I've found. Once you're inside 3 months, it can vary from day to day, sometimes even hour to hour, what price you're going to pay.

Your best bet is to keep checking back, to see what sort of prices are being offered. I have literally checked in the morning, and had round trip airfare (from DFW to upstate NY) at >$300, then checked back in the afternoon, and had it half that price. My next trip home, I scored a ticket on American Airlines website for $255, when everyone else was still advertising $380-ish, and that was purchased 2 months in advance.

Usually, the sweet spot is ~3 weeks. Once you're within a week, you're almost guaranteed to pay more, unless you're flying major city to major city (or hub to hub), or you're willing to make last minute travel plans (not something I'm really capable of doing, unfortunately).

Some of the travel sites will let you sign up for fare watches, where you tell them where you want to fly, and they'll notify you if the airfare drops below a set point you establish. Doesn't hurt to sign up for last minute deals, either, if you're able to schedule vacation time on short notice.

Use Kayak.com and always check the airline's site to see if they offer the lowest fare or close to it. As with hotels, you will get better customer service (if something goes wrong) if you purchase direct.

As for cheapest flight times, generally Tues-Thurs are the cheapest days to go. If you book too far out, you'll pay more (like 6 months out). If you book too close, fare buckets tend to close up and you'll also pay more. I try to book 2 or so months out if I can help it.

What route are you trying to book?
