Right, I've just installed a new HD (IBM 60gxp 61Gb) I got it all formatted and installed with WinMe, graphics drivers and quake 3 :) so last night i set about installing my modem (us robotics 33.6 external serial) suprise suprise windows couldnt see it.
I rebooted to check the serial port stuff in the bios (I have gigabyte GA-7ZX), it was all set to auto and i didnt change it, exit the bios and it goes to "WAIT..." then it detects my new HD and then just stops - now, something i should have said before, i have my old maxtor 6.4gig and creative DVD on ide 2 and it all worked fine until now.

So its not detecting whats on ide 2, BUT it does detect it in the BIOS when i select auto detect, but not when its booting?!? I have swapped cables etc. all the drives work when plugged into ide 1, but not when something else is plugged into ide 2 (but i know its detecting them because it finds them in the bios!)

Please help, this is doin' my head in!!

in the device manager does the second ide channel have the yellow & black exclamation point on it? if so you might have a virus. if both channels have them, then you have something else. boot into safe mode, remove the hdd controller and both ide channels from device manager (which may require taking them out of the registry - do a search for child in the registry, you'll find 2 under MF, remove the two child devices), then search the registry for noide and remove it. reboot, let it find everything, should work fine. if you don't feel comfy in the registry don't try this, find someone who does or who knows how to do the fix, because i don't wanna be responsible if you mess it up. :)
