Where's a good place in the US to live?

The wife and I have decided that its time to pack up and likely leave the Chicagoland area. We've saved up a nice chunk of change and we're looking to relocate some where that the cost of living is not as expensive. More than likely we may move somewhere among the southern states where it's warm all year around, but we have considered maybe looking further south in Illinois (Peoria, Danville, Champaign, etc..) . We're both pretty burned out on our jobs so we plan on looking for a reasonably priced home and either working part time for a couple of years or either trying to live off our real estate earnings (rentals, rehab profits, etc..), so for the first couple of years we'll really be interested in finding a nice area to live in but one where the homes are moderately priced.

Anyone have some suggestions?

I'm a former Yankee (upstate NY) and I've NEVER been to 'Bama.

Ah, I see what you were getting at, they come to visit and never leave...I get it.

If you are not a Yankee....what are you? And if you moved to anywhere in the south and stayed the term is still accurate. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It doesn't count if you moved to Florida because most Floridians are Yankees as well.

The Washington area sucks royally, high unemployment, high housing costs, and horrible weather. It is definitely not a place you would want to live.

Heh thats funny you say that. I just graduated in May and am lookin for a job still. And I see you are in Manassas. I have a job interview there on Monday at 11am :). I'm in Maryland, so the commute there would be bad.

But all in all, from the OP original descriptiion, yea the metropolitan area of MD/DC/VA would not suit your needs at all ... its like 100% opposite :)

South Florida is very nice.
Southern California is probably perfect for you, best weather in the world and not as brutal as Florida is during the summer.

You might like being somewhere around Atlanta. Plenty of suburbs and little cities within an hour of the city. You can live in a quiet little town and still be close enough to a big city for all your entertainment needs.

True... But what from what I have heard, SD isn't as bad as lets say Orange County or LA.
