The treasury didn't start it, a man named Hank Eskin did. But the treasury appears to have stamped bills with it though and says it's ok to write on them.

It appears the Treasury didn't participate, so I was wrong about that, too. Funny, I'm positive I remember watching television ads promoting the 'currency tracking project' and it was sponsored by some department of the Treasury that promotes other things of public interest/education. A national television ad campaign costs millions of dollars. I doubt a hobbyist would be dropping that kind of dough, even one who is a Wharton grad.

I picked one up (written in pen) on a camping trip to Oregon about 5 years ago. I brought it back home to Canada and it's been sitting on my desk ever since. I just don't have occasion to spend US singles very often.
