So I used to live in Petaluma, CA and am currently living (for the better part of a year) in Lucerne Valley, CA.

I filled up at the local gas station yesterday because I am moving back to Petaluma tomorrow. I used cash because it was quite a bit cheaper and I got a $1 bill back as part of my change. This morning I am putting the bill into my wallet and notice a www.whereisgeorge.com stamp on it, so I entered it into the site. It is from Petaluma! WTFBBQ

There is no way to fudge the entry, because it only says where it is from after you enter the serial number.

I think I'll take it back to Petaluma with me tomorrow...

I never get anything but initial entries at that site. I just randomly put in fake numbers whenever I visit. Rebel without a cause.

Wow I remember that site from 10 years ago... didn't know it was still around.

I used to chat regularly with the creator/owner of that site on another forum.

The secret service made him stop selling the rubber stamps. They weren't too happy about him promoting the defacing(defacement?) of currency. Though I still occasionally get a bill that has the old stamp on it. I imagine they are slowly getting phased out of circulation.

I grew up in Petaluma! I moved to Ukiah when I was 12, and I'm there now as it happens. :) Nothing beats Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino Counties. :)

Marin County beats it, but it's too expensive now. I was raised in Novato until HS, then I moved all over Marin. (Redwood HS is a zoo.) I can't wait to get out of the desert though, sooo many creepy crawlies out here it isn't funny.

When I was loading my truck yesterday I turned around and saw this:

Couldn't someone just sequentially enter a ton of numbers with the same zip code? Just take a $1 and increment it over and over.

Obviously if it was stamped, I'm sure it was someone who did it legit, but I'm pretty sure you can enter fake ID's and locations on that page.

Wait Redwood? What year did you graduate HS.....? My fam is from Corte Madera, my aunt still lives in Novato. I spent the weekend down there last week, as a matter of fact.

I like Sonoma/Mendo more than Marin because Marin is a tad too cold for me. I like me some 90 degree days. :)

I don't mind the snakes, but I don't get how anyone could live, or want to live in such a dead/dry place. Give me greenery and running water... and above all, a LEGITIMATE change of seasons!

Congratulations. You are now the proud owner of illegal tender. By stamping that bill, it has been defaced and is considered an invalid instrument by the United States Government. Have a nice day!

(For the record, I don't give a shit.)

What would have been even cooler is if you had drawn on it or something, or knew you were the first one to put it into the site, so you came across a dollar you had used years ago.

I actually got my first couple hits on Wheresgeorge.com last month. One of them was received by a dude who has entered over 66,000 bills and has over 3000 hits.

Oh, and last week, I received as change a $20 bill from 1969 that was in excellent condition. 41 years old! Someone had this bill stashed away for a few decades. Its nearly pristine.

Must render bill unfit for circulation or reissue:
Defacement of Currency

Defacement of currency is a violation of Title 18, Section 333 of the United States Code. Under this provision, currency defacement is generally defined as follows: Whoever mutilates, cuts, disfigures, perforates, unites or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking association, Federal Reserve Bank, or Federal Reserve System, with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.
BTW, the Treasury stamped millions of $1 bills to kick-off this Where's George thing, which originally was created under the auspices of the US Treasury (it has since been transferred to a private entity).

Do you have a source for that information?
