Pretend you were a math major living about half an hour away from Berkeley, and about six hours from UCLA..doing math.

UCLA.

<-- biased.

really, if I had gotten into berkeley (probably the best thing that i didn't) my parents were ready to force me to go. they also had it in their mind to have me live at home and COMMUTE to berkeley every day. that's OVER AN HOUR because i would have had to drive to fremont, leave my car there, and then take bart into berkeley. (coming from san jose)

it was nice to get away from the bay area, although down here you have the inherent "norcal vs socal, which is better" arguments a lot and the insanity of LA is hard to get used to at first, but sometimes you just like being here.

If I already lived in the East Bay, I'd goto UCLA. If I would be moving to either place, I'd go to Berkeley.

I'm not going to vote, but I'll say I'm in the same boat. I live 40 mins from Berkeley and have a hard time justifying spending the money to rent a place when home's "close". In the end I lived at Berkeley for a year (dorms) and another year in an apartment. But over the summers and the other two years I lived at home and commuted... breaking a few laws every day to make the commute 30 mins. If I had to do it again... I might've picked UCLA for that reason alone. Having your own space, and not having to question the validity of it is great.

Millenium, I've seen plenty of your posts, and I know you think all Californians are liberal hippies, but I think that's a pretty narrow view to label everyone who's from California as that.

Did I say anything about liberals? My whole point was that Cali is not the end all for educational pursuits...

Well, could've said that simply then. Syringer said these were his two choices, if he wanted to go out of state, he would've added that as another option in his poll.

And did Syringer say anything about Cali as the only place for education

He asked a simple question of two colleges. Does it really matter what state it is for them? Truth be told, out of state tuition is always higher for virtually any college.

uc berkeley - ranked 20th in the nation, top public school in the nation
UCLA - ranked 25th in the nation, third ranked public school in the nation
UC San Diego - ranked 30th in the nation
UC Davis - ranked 43rd in the nation
UC Irvine - ranked 45th in the nation
UC Santa Barbara - ranked 47th in the nation
UC Riverside and Santa Cruz - in the second tier (second 50 group in the nation)

if you're talking about k-12 education, then that's a different story.

Syringer's last 50,000 posts have been him saying he IS going to UCLA.

Which school is cheaper? And which school has the better looking girls? Those are the real important things to think about before making such an important decision in life.

Asian parents always have it in their minds that their children live at home and commute long distances to school -- and then spend the weekends helping out at their restaurant.

Also biased went to UCLA but didn't apply to Berkeley. If you want a straight education then go to Berkeley but if you want a better experience then go to UCLA, more fun by far and if you haven't experienced SoCal then I highly recommend it.
