Where would you hide it?

Brilliant... (evil grin).

My best idea so far:

Open up coworkers PC. Preferably someone not too computer savvy.

Stick in the device, preferably somewhere where it looks connected to some other hardware. Or perhaps it's small enough to slide under the motherboard, out of sight.

Close up PC, hilarity ensues. Try to somehow keep a straight face.

Other than that, finding a hollow piece of furniture or equipment to drop it in will probably work. Doubtful they'd find it within it's month long lifespan without dismantling everything.

edit: gotta love the testimonial:

Dear friends at thinkgeek.com,

I recently acquired the "Annoy-A-Tron" from your web site. Actually, I acquired two, thinking that perhaps two devices might be necessary to truly splinter the minds of my friends and co-workers. How woefully did I underestimate this powerful tool.

I have watched this simple device transform an (until-now) mild-mannered colleague into a spitting, cussing, paranoid lunatic.

He has ordered all of the staff he supervises (not a small number) to locate the source of the dread beeping before doing anything else (but since they are in on the prank, they haven't been much help). So he waits, white-knuckles gripping the edge of his desk, anticipating the next beep.

He has set a timer on his computer to track the duration between beeps. It hasn't been much help.

My favorite quote so far, nearly bursting that vein on his temple as he shouted it: "That beep has been F***ING with me for HOURS now."

He has called the facilities department to schedule a maintenance worker to investigate.

He speculates that "they" might be doing air-quality testing in the building. This beep must be some device in the ducts detecting dangerous levels of asbestos in the air. Or worse. Radon? Aerosolized mercury? Legionella spores?

The beep means something. What does the beep mean? Is it a warning? It sounds urgent, doesn't it? It's telling us to do something. But what? Replace a battery? Call the authorities? Evacuate the premises? Scrub ourselves with disinfectant and put on haz-mat suits and call our families to give them our tearful goodbyes?

I imagine that soon he will begin to take things apart. He will methodically dismantle all of the electrical devices in his office, creating an unusually precise metaphor for what is happening in his psyche.

I am reminded what a thin and fragile thread keeps us attached to sanity. Today, this tiny little device helped me break a co-worker's mind, and I thank you for the sinfully pleasurable schadenfreude.

My best to you,
John

Conference room, just for large meetings. Folks will be rooting through their purses, briefcases, beltclips, etc. sure that it is their cell phone with the low battery.

Good one ironwing ;)

Oooh... what about this.

Stick it inside a piece of foam. Now, after hours get in the office of the victim. Be careful doing the next step so you don't win a Darwin award.

Stand on his desk and push up a ceiling tile. Stick the Annoy-A-Tron encased in foam up there. Replace tile, leave and enjoy.

Problem with putting it in a PC is that the IT team gets to deal with it, and probably figures it out.

Air vent is one option. Another would be to open up a piece of office equipment like an electric pencil sharpener, a lamp, or some inconspicuous location inside their desk(like behind a drawer) and attach in there.

If you can find a file cabinet with "hollow sides" (small gap between the outside of the drawer in question and the second "inner" layer of metal), slip it inside one of the "slits" that are used by the sliding metal file organizers. If you position it right, they'll never get it out. :D

We has one in our boss' office underneath his fancy chair. Its hidden well up in there so even if he looks under cant see it immediately :D been about...oh...5-6 months now. Each time we come in there for a meeting ask what that beep is - he just gets annoyed and says what beep i dont hear it anymore.

And you might not want to put it inside a PC as it has a fiarly strong magnet on the back. Its like an earthmagnet almost.

Thats where I stuck one before I went on leave for a while, it took them a week to find it. Then the guy that found it put it up in the celling by the vent. Worked great driving coworkers crazy.

Put it in the ICU, on the underside of the cart holding the ventilator.

Whoa, thinkgeek claims the battery only lasts one month.

Did you put a new battery in?

Nope havent had to replace the battery yet as far as i know (unless one of the other people in on the joke did). We have it set to go off at random intervals and seems to go off like once every 10-20 minutes so maybe thats why? not sure i just know it has lasted since i started which was 6 months ago.

LOL who will be first to nuke the whole building to get rid of noise?

Are there some tools that let you detect strong magnetic fields? If you don't detach magnet, it should be fairly easy to find.

I once at a friend's house and we were hangning out in his basement. I picked a metronome up off the piano and began screwing with it. Eventually I left it on and stuck it in the AC vent in the ceiling. You could hear the tick-tick-tick from everywhere in the house, and because it was coming from all the vents it was hard to locate.

This would be a good hiding place if you are doing it to someone's home/apartment rather than their office.

Lots of magnetic fields present in hard drives with their powerfool neodymium magnets. That said, just add another hard drive to the PC in which this modification has been performed!
