where would you buy laptop batteries from?

for me, buying electronics on ebay is always a crapshoot.. sometimes i get good stuff, sometimes the quality leaves something to be desired. the price cant be beat though.

so i'm looking to get a second battery for a laptop that i'll be traveling extensively with. i could buy it from dell, but then it'd cost like $150 (6 cell battery for a dell c400). ebay is about half that price, but they all come with 'battery sold as is' which sounds awfully shady.

what would you do? pay more for a guaranteed product, or pay less and hope for the best? does anyone else know any other reputable dealers that they'd be confident buying from?

I wouldn't buy batteries on EBay.. There are too many things that can be wrong with the battery, including being a faulty battery that damages your laptop. You also don't want a battery that's been lying around, and used batteries could have a lot less life

I've bought other accessories on ebay though, like docking stations.

It defeats the purpose to buy a used battery. I recommend getting an original manufacturer product, but not through the manufacturer product. Use pricewatch.com to find the best prices, I found a 9-cell batt for my T42 for like ~$80 which is more than half of what IBM wants for it.

So you don't want to buy good reliable battery from APC Battery manufacturer ???

ebay.
Have bought several over the years.
Always buy brand new ones though, in factory sealed boxes.
Have saved as much as 90%!!!! and as little as 20%.

The exception when used would be O.K. is if it is a brand new model release (like Dell i9200)..
Many times a battery will be upgraded right after laptop purchase, so used stock battery may be as good as new.

eBay is okay as long as its never used. IBM's Battery Info tool tells you the first use date & # of cycles, so that is nice to confirm status of batteries.
Whatever you do, stay away from used.

eBay is risky because even a sealed "new" battery from an old model can be faulty simply because the battery is so old. The seller can't verify that the battery works because it is still sealed in the box. I have bought a battery for a Tp560 off eBay in sealed box, and the battery arrived dead. The seller was not at fault because the battery was never opened.

Again, if the battery is too expensive, then it is pretty much a wash.

Anyone know a good place to get a 12 cell battery for the HP DV1000? I can't find them anywhere besides at HP.com for $180 and E-bay for like $150.

I got a decent refurb battery from ebay for an old Latitude CsX500. Spent $50 and it works great. I got the laptop for free from a friend, but he told me the battery was dead. Popped into ebay and bang, decent little laptop for 50 bones!

I would just go through ebay. However, do your research. Make sure the battery is new and check the feedback of the seller. As many posters above said, getting a used battery defeats the purpose of buying a new one. As long as the seller has good feedback and the item is new, you won't beat the price you can find them for on ebay. Try to avoid buying from the manufacturer if possible, I know dell jacks their battery prices up by 50-100 atleast.
