There is no online kit, all you need is PS2, Network Adapter, and a router if you have Cable/DSL. The server listings come up in SOCOM, Madden 2003, etc. because the Developers are responsible for they're own Servers. The Adapter was supposed to come with the Install software on CD.

Thanx for the reply.

I have heard that you do not need the actual ps2 network adapter, but simply purchase a usb network adapter and plug it in. Here's what I found http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=296598

Sure it doesn't come with the network startup disc, but all the new games should already come with their own network software. Since the ps2 network adapter is so hard to find, it'd be a help if the usb network adapter would accomplish the same function.

What do you think?

i've got a 3com ethernet/usb adapter and it works fine for tony hawk 3. haven't tried any other games, but i presume that it would work for others as well. plus $10 is much better than $40.

Where did you get your adapter. Can you post up a link to it? The ones I looked around for were $30. I'd much rather pay $10 for it :)

yeah, this part's the bad news... right up until the official sony adapter came out, you could grab these 3com adapters from just about anywhere (such as tigerdirect.com) for $5, but interestingly when the sony version came out, 3rd party adapters suddenly were discontinued. I looked around shopping.yahoo.com and found a couple of adapters available for about $20, so you might want to check there. I got mine off ebay, came in factory packaging and all, so maybe check there as well. good luck beating THE MAN. ;)

I heard Sony is trying to phase out the compatibility of the USB network adapters working with the PS2 forcing people to actually purchase Sony's network adapter.

Have you heard anything about that?

I don't see how they'd be able to do that

Yep. They are removing support in the game for the adapters. Instead of the software looking at the different ports trying to get online they look for a network adapter to be installed.

I own a PS2 and have a USB adapter not from Sony, but hell, is Sony TRYING to make me purchase an X-Box?

haha good point Rishi

I don't see what the big deal is about buying your own adapter. They are making a killing as is on the PS2 network adapters as the average person would not know to just use a regular USB adapter. And every store is always sold out of the PS2 adapters, which tells you money is being made.

Sometimes I just don't understand companies. Live and let live huh?

Microsoft, on the other hand, has taken the opposite approach so far with Gamespy and XBConnect. Both have been running for almost a year and MS hasnt tried to close it down or stop them from providing that service. They say it just shows how much people want to play XBOX online.

Silly Sony fails to realize that something as simple as this is all it takes for a diehard Sony fan (or at least an anti-Microsoft fan) to lose their 'diehard' status.

yep yep. Sony's going about this all wrong.

Another questions. There's no subscription service with Sony correct? I believe there's a $50 yearly charge for XBox online. Does Sony carry a similiar charge? or is it free?

So with Sony this comes on a Game to Game basis? Some games may charge for online play, and some may not?
