Senior in High School. Sitting in a accounting class. the principal came over the intercom and said "attention, 2 minutes into launch"... the first thing i thought of was the russians are nuking us.

OT to the thread but was nuclear war with the russians a big concern for high school students at the time?

how is it off topic to the thread? he asked where was I when the challenger exploded and I answered him. sitting in a high school accounting class. the reason i associated the prinicipals announcement to a nuke attack is because he had a long pause after the word launch because he was choked up. i didnt know there was a shuttle launch that day and the only thing i though of russian ICBM's being launched.

I think he meant "sorry to ask this question knowing its OT to the thread but was war a big concern..."

Not accusing you of being OT.....

We had the day off from school that day because of snow. Was over at a friend's house playing Dipolmacy when his mom called home with the news.

I was at home sick watching the "Price is Right" when they cut in with the news. I believe I was in the 4th grade.

I was home sick as well, except I was watching jeopardy.

:Q

I was home from school too, I believe we had a snow day or something like that. I think I was in the 4th grade also.

I was 18. I had crashed at a girlfriends house the night before. I woke up, walked out to her living room, turned on the TV and saw it happen live.

I was in 10th grade science class, and one of the other teachers in the building ran into the class and announced it. We were all just quiet for a few minutes...

2nd grade. It was announced over the loudspeaker and I remember a lot of people getting really sad and upset.

My 8th grade teacher was teaching school, and watching it with his class. He cried when he saw it. He told us this during 9/11 because he wanted us to remember where we were, as our grandchildren would ask us where we were during 9/11

I was in 4th grade, IIRC. I remember everybody asking ME what happened instead of the teacher. All I could say was, "They're gone. The shuttle blew up; they're gone." :(

I was in 7th grade. I had just rolled out of bed to get ready for school and turned on the TV in time to see the SRB's wandering off. Then the camera cut back to Peter Jennings shuffling his papers... looking stunned.

At school, still remember the day -- was in the office and someone told me. Didn't believe them at first.

I was home from school for some reason (3rd grade in Orlando) and we were watching it on tv. As soon as it exploded, we all darted out the door. We watched the smoke and the falling debris. It was a surreal and sad moment.
