I worked at Walmart night shifts at the time. Horrible sleep problems. ON 9-11, I got home after sunrise and had the morning news shows on tv. Once the live streams from Ground Zero commenced I just stayed up until 2 pm watching the carnage the muslims wrought living out their religion. Treating us the way their quran dictates.

That night as I drove myself to work at 10:40pm, the local rock station had the gall to play Drowning Pool's Let the Bodies Hit the Floor. That pissed me off no end. Dragged myself into the store and the PA system was just playing news reports, no music. I commented to the store manager I was sick of hearing about the disaster. Store closed a few minutes later and the PA reverted to playing the usual music. Guess the manager listened.

Was in my 3rd year of college and I woke up and turned on the TV and saw it going on. Then I believe I had an 11am class and when I got to class there was a sign on the door saying classes were canceled for the rest of the day. I was glued to the TV the rest of the day and at night there was a vigil on campus that I went to, with a lot of people speaking up and having parents who worked in WTC and hadn't been heard from yet. It was pretty emotional hearing these kids talk about that.

Girlfriend came over and woke me up sometime after the first tower fell. Flipped on CNN and watched the second tower fall. I made a comment that some group of people were going to die once our response arrived. Then I turned off the TV and went to the zoo. It was the first time I realized that I really don't get any emotions about this kind of stuff.

I was vacationing at the family cottage on Walloon Lake. Didn't even realize it happened until the 11:00 news came on. We hadn't turned on the radio or TV all day until then. Kinda put a damper on the rest of the week.

i watched the events from my high school class. Vividly remember it.

Also does anyone know how to find threads on here from that day? It would be a surreal thing to read through.

Edit, found it: https://forums.anandtech.com/thread...-into-the-world-trade-center-building.611382/

Waking up at my GF(future ex-wife) apartment. She woke me up to say a plane crashed into a tower. I thought what idiot crashes into the world trade center? Then watching on live TV I saw the other plane come in and hit the other tower. Unbelievable to see. She went to work, I drove home and watched the events unfold.

I remember being really into mobile suit gundam which had been in the third act of the show when 9/11 happened. I was dismayed to see it abruptly canceled and replaced with more "kiddie" friendly shows. It felt like every tv channel was watering down their lineup to strike a "softer" tone.

I was having a coffee watching cnn like I always did back then. It was scary as fuck and surreal. I couldn't even imagine how the first responders were feeling.

Ah yes, media response.
There was a sudden conversion to "hard news" as people wanted to know what exactly what going down in other countries - fewer lifestyle segments, and guest appearances by authors/actors pushing their latest project. Not sure how long that lasted.

I was in college and the cowardly dean had all the tv's shut off and the internet filtered out news sites. I went to her office to voice my opinion and she refused to see me. Probably hiding under her desk.

I was laying out a bridge, and sitting in the truck doing comps when I heard it on the radio. I got home, dragged the tv out of the basement, and watched planes crash into buildings for almost a week. After that the tv went back in the basement, and hasn't been used since.

I was at work when the 1st plane hit. A coworker was talking about CNN showing a plane hit the World Trade Center. I was busy and thought it was like the old Empire State hit. Then I left for my college classes (last 2 classes before graduating) and listened to the news on the radio.
I knew it was terror when I heard the 2nd plane hit.
We had the 1st class. My 2nd class, the prof knew everyone was too distracted, he tried getting the room’s TV on a cable channel, but couldn’t so we were dismissed.
I didn’t go back to work that day, we visited family since my house was about 2mi from an airport.

I will also say that the current company I work for was formed in direct response to 9/11, which is also a pretty cool story.

What is it that you do for a living? I need that job, you always sound like you’re outdoors and having a good time etc

Land surveyor. Hard to recommend, but also hard to dissuade someone from choosing it as an occupation. Money isn't that great, especially by ATOT standards, but I've seen a lot of cool stuff, get exercise, and have a level of autonomy most people don't get.

There's money to be made if you really want to hustle. A friend of mine is making big bucks doing layout for Amazon, and some rail work around Dulles, but he's doing insane hours, and for Amazon, flying around the country. That's not for me. I like coming and going as I choose, and the company I'm with is tiny. Tiny companies come with tiny $, but I get asked if I want to do work, not told. Also, no bureaucracy. There's no orders by invisible people from above. That suits me more than money.

In the end, it's a job. If I were rich, I wouldn't do it, but it's hard to complain too much. Been wondering lately if I should have gotten into forestry. Too old to change now, and it's a job too. Stuff that's fun as an amateur can get crappy when you have to do it :shrugs: Not much point in dwelling on it too much. I did what I did, and that's fine. Can't complain about the path I took.

I was in Kuwait supporting Operation Southern Watch. Felt weird as heck feeling safer over there and worrying about my family in the States.
