where was your last vacation?

I don't think anyone really wants to. But life/circumstances sometimes demand it. So they sacrifice. There's no need to look down on others and think you're better than them.

I was referring to the people working for Google, Facebook, etc. and those people would definitely have more options.

It isn't a matter of being "better" than someone. It is a matter of knowing what is important in life. As I told a previous poster, we're all responsible for our own lives and while some may have to work ridiculous hours, they should be planning an exit strategy. Bragging about working long hours is dumb.

i just got back from a week in holden beach, nc today. was a very relaxing vacation. i can't believe how fast it went by.

I don't understand why someone would want to work at a place where 80 hours/week is expected.

I was referring to the people working for Google, Facebook, etc. and those people would definitely have more options.

Sometimes, especially at a place like Google, Facebook, and Apple, people work those hours because they know that what they are doing is literally transforming the world. They are among the few people that actually have a major influence in the shape of the future.

Just got back from Brazil. Went out there for both family and the world cup. Pretty eye-opening, it's not as civilized as some people may think. Graffiti everywhere...

My work is 2-fold. We get vacation time, but at the same time you can never shut yourself off from it. I was on my computer non-stop while there making sure everyone was okay. A lot of people can't hold their pants up when others are away it seems.

Every one I know that has gone to Atlantic City just isn't impressed. I fear going only because I've been to Vegas and it seems like I would just depressed that it wasn't good enough. Plus, it is in New Jersey... =(

I have decided on Spain for my next vacation. Although, that won't be for probably around a year from now.

Depends on why you're going to AC. I went last year to see Drew Carey comedy show at the Borgata and spent the night. I even got comped the show tickets just for signing up for the casino's loyalty program - yeah, they have some of my marketing data now like my home address and fake email account but so what? The whole ambience of a casino amuses me and it was intersting to people watch for a few hours also. I certainly wouldn't go to AC to gamble or for a long vacation however.

I wouldn't call the beaches beautiful but Hilton Head has great seafood and plenty of golf courses. But you made a big mistake buying a timeshare. I wouldn't take a timeshare even if I was given one for free. Maintenance and fees are not worth it.

I think I can swing $350 every 3 years. Also, it's an island, and if you read the local news, the last resort ever is now being built because the rest of the island's undeveloped land was bought up for preservation by the government.

Going to be making some bank on it by renting it to golfers every year 😎

Unfortunately a lot of people can't get other jobs. It's hard to just say no and potentially get fired when you've got a house and a family and can't just move.

We just got back from Hilton Head last week. Liked it so much we ended up buying a timeshare condo there. Freakin' awesome island. You can walk everywhere, great seafood, everything is covered in natural trees (you can't see any buildings from the street), beautiful beaches, and supercars driving around everywhere 😀
The sales pitch is that powerful, huh?
My 4 days at Myrtle Beach is covered (actually, I get money back) by attending a 2 hour time share meeting. So far, the high pressure sales reps haven't penetrated my armor. But, I'm guessing these are the big league reps, compared to vacuum salesmen, window and vinyl siding salesmen, and other household overpriced stuff salesmen. It should be pretty simple though... "I hate people. There are too many people in Myrtle Beach. Nothing I hate more than crowds."

And, on my last two "vacations", I spent a significant amount of time with no one else in site; no visible houses, no visible people, and I was outdoors.

I'd rather spend the money than listen to the time share pitch. I absolutely despise those time share sales people.

Last vacation in Vancouver, BC. Only 5 days though.

Heh. I went there with the intention of getting one. Two people in my office has time shares in Key West and Hilton Head and they kick ass. I guess they changed the way time share work in the last few years, and now they're more like a super-reduced Priceline subscription. We're paying a flat $12000 for a 2 bedroom condo on the island for one week every other year. If we don't want to stay there, we can trade it for 2 weeks elsewhere. We also get access to their hotel network and can stay in a lot of top resorts around the world for insane prices.

You do not want to get a timeshare in places like Florida, Virginia Beach, California coasts, etc, because they're a dime a dozen in those areas. Islands and land locked areas are great for them because it's going to be a limited resource and therefore valuable. If you know what you're doing with timeshares you can really do well.

no yearly maintenance fees?

$12000 for a week in a 2 bed-room condo every other year? How retarded to boot are you?

Jeebus. Holy fuck thats a shitload of money... Plus you toss in the travel time there, the food + drinks every time.... and thats regardless of if you can go or not.

Lol. Timeshares as valuable investment? You gotta be kidding me. You got suckered. 😀

There's no shortage of hotels and condos in Hilton Head. I paid $55 a night for Hilton and Marriott beach resorts through Priceline the last couple times I vacationed there. Granted it was during the off season but there's no shortage of lodging at Hilton Head.

Yeah I don't fully understand. Is that a one time payment of $12,000, or an actual recurring payment?!

Food and drink costs won't be a lot. Having an actual kitchen and fridge allows you to buy groceries and only go out to eat when you want to enjoy it. You save a lot of money that way. Regardless of that, I was under the impression time shares are universally considered a rip off and a borderline scam.

generally speaking it's an upfront payment + yearly maintenance fees + a shitload of other fees everytime you want to do something

Not sure what Fritzo has going on, really curious - he's either 1) delusional or 2) got a great fucking deal that's pretty much unheard of

It's a one time payment, then it's yours for life. The plan is to rent the room for $3750 for the week and we trade it in for two weeks somewhere else.

Like I said, they changed the way timeshares work recently. Before they had that "points" system and that's what gave them a bad name. The newer "floating" method is a lot better.

Also, location is everything. Timeshares are only profitable in limited areas, and you have to look for someone that wants to sell theirs and basically take over payments. The room we bought is normally around $30K, so the resells are where you find the deals. If you ask a salesman, he'll he-haw around a bit, then after you refuse to buy he'll go talk to his manager and then that's when you get the good pricing. Hilton Head is unique because it also has one of the best golf courses in the country, and golfers that travel there are usually loaded---so they like to stay in nice places. We basically bought the timeshare so we could rent it out and stay in other places 🙂

Is this for everyone? No. Is it risky if you don't know what you're doing? Yes. Is it awesome if you can find something where everything lines up? Yes.

Fritzo, why would I pay $3250 a week for your place when I can get an AirBnB place for cheaper? There is a 3 bedroom apartment (entire apartment) on the golf resort listed for less than half that.

going to Williamsburg/VA Beach in a few weeks. 4 of us and we don't have to pay to fly all 4 as we're driving. Will save a ton of money. We try to go on one a year and this is it with the kids getting out of camp and just before going into school. Our last vaca was Disney World which cost well over $4k, but we'd only do it for Disney.
