Where to stay in San Francisco?

What area is best for a first-timer? I'll probably rent a car but still don't wanna spend most of my time driving. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Actually, the Hyatt at the Embarcadero is nice. Great view of the waterfront.

The W is very very nice. When AMD had their Athlon 64 launch event that is where they put us up at. Very swanky..... They also have a wireless access point in the lobby and broadband in the rooms......
