What area is best for a first-timer? I'll probably rent a car but still don't wanna spend most of my time driving. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have found that staying on the corner of walk and don't walk has alway served me well.

YMMV.

For you, I would highly recommend a hotel on Castro Street. I'm sure you'll find exactly what you are looking for there ;)

Stay at the W, the most awesome hotel I have stayed at anywhere. Within Walking Distance of Union Square, PacBell Park and Chinatown.

The W is very very nice. When AMD had their Athlon 64 launch event that is where they put us up at. Very swanky.....:) They also have a wireless access point in the lobby and broadband in the rooms......
