Where to stay in Boston?

I had this great idea today.

Go to Boston tomorrow.

Key destinations:
1) Sunday: Museum of Science
2) Saturday: Charles Ro (largest toy train store in the US)

Charles Ro is in Malden, Mass (link to Google maps) which is north of Boston.

So, we want to stay near the center of Boston overnight or north of Boston somewhere.

We basically want a "good" neighborhood where we can get reasonable rates.

Thanks!

oh man, this city totally does NOT understand the concept of "reasonable rates" 🙁

I would expect at least 250$ for a single room with two full size beds for 1 night.

This might help

Haha there are no such reasonable rates in Boston. Sorry to break that to you. The gf and I are going at the end of October to attend a medical conference and their "special discounted rooms" were $299 a night. Needless to say, we checked around more, and we got into a best western near the hospital district for $99 a night by telling them we were going to a medical conference. They booked us on the "medical" rate (which is usually reserved for people staying with relatives at nearby hospitals) of $99. Figured it was a steal, so we're going for it.

You got a steal.

What about Lexington Mass?

As I mentioned in the OP, I will be able to stay much farther north outside of Boston. But where? I don't know the neighborhoods.

Travelocity has reviews. Some places are rated 3/5. Maybe if I just avoid those and read th reviews 🙂

Don't stay in Roxbury, Forest Hills, Mission Hill, Dorchester, anywhere near Boston University Medical Center.

I don't know too much outside of boston. If you stay within boston, you will pay the price, but you will be have immediate access to "stuff" outside your hotel door.

You might be able to find stuff outside of boston, but you are not guaranteed a great price either.

Edit:

SirStev0 is correct. Braintree/Quincy is much cheaper, however it is south of Boston.

Stay away from Mattapan

Edit2:

Also, be aware that the rating system could be "stars" like 5 star hotel is luxurious, 3 star hotel is reasonable ("free breakfast"), 2 star hotel is minimum service etc.

If you're thinking Malden and Boston, I would suggest a hotel along Rt 93. Towns - Quincy, Medford, Malden, Stoneham, Woburn or even Burlington(a bit far)

I stayed at a pretty nice B&B in Salem. It was substantially cheaper than a hotel.

The Inn at 7 Winter St.

I was there during the week so rates might have been cheaper than on weekends.

I stayed at the Sheraton Commander in Cambridge. It was like 2-3 blocks from Harvard and the subway stop. They were very decent priced too.
